Campbell attempted to ke ep up w ith Gibson 's frantic pace , but as the second s t ick ed by , Gibson set his MX400 on Pro Nat ional speed and quick ly pu ll ed awa y from the im p ressive Campbell , pu ll ing out so me inc re d ib le jum p com bi nations, as he was able to hoo k up and double seemingly im po ssible d istanc es on the big stroke r. Gibson had a gi ant lead at th e ch eck er ed flag , w ith C ampbe ll coming home in second , follow ed by Reed and Mike Morg an . In m ota tw o , Gib son quickly found h imself in th e lead , wh ile th e usua l suspects sorted th em selves o ut and fought for se c ond - pl ac e. Reed rode incred ibly well (es pec ia lly after hav ing ba ttled hi s way to tw o wi ns in the Over 25 cla ss ) a nd took sec o nd , wh ile Campbell sett led for thi rd and, ultimately , third overa ll for the da y . Reed went 3-2. Other impressive rid es o n th e day were registered by yo ung rid er s such as Ricky Renner, who beste d the very fast Tyler " Danger Boy" Bowers. The KTM -mounted Renne r we nt 2- I in the 6 5cc class , ahead of T eam G reen' s KX 65-mo un ted Bowers (1-2) . These yo ung lion s also faced off in the Mini Junio r class, in which Renn er again won o ut, goi ng I -Ion his Yamaha , ahead of Bowers (2 -2) . The event , w hich served as a po ints -p ay in g rou nd in the ECEA and N ET RA En d u r o C h a m p i o n sh i p s , proved to be o ne of the lo ngest and most demanding eve nts m ost of these Northeastern U.S . rid ers will see all yea r. Finish ing th ird overall (and first out of all th e riders who wo uld have to show up at work on Mo nday) was NETRA' s J err y M ad ore w it h 27 p o ints , foll ow ed b y E C EA hotsh o e Fred Hoess w it h 28 . Rounding out the f i e ld we re KT M r id er Pat Ga r ra ha n wi th 28 , Gas Gas pilot M att Sta vish w ith 29, KTM -m ounted Hans Neff wi th 32 , Ho nda m an Er ic McEachern w ith 33 , and KTM jocke ys Bill Atkinson and Richard Laff ert y . both with 34 . After a brief trek down the road , a qu i ck 4 -m ile A lB- only section got th ings heated up , with the fastest rid ers dropping three or four points each in th e rock - in fested trails. Lafferty , Madore and Ga rrahan set the pace with three each . followed by several fours. The C , Super Senior and Women riders were spa red the section . Everyone got to ride the next 5 mile section , wh ich served as th e day 's first emergency - poi nts -taker. La f fer t y n a il ed down t he b est t im e (2 : 16) , foll o wed by Ha wki ns (2:46 ) , Mad or e (2 :48) and Garrahan (2:59). A gas stop and a short reset foll owed ; Haw ki ns lost a po int at the check -in after try ing to repa ir his fad in g clu tc h. Lafferty aga in set the pace , dropping o n ly tw o p oi nts in the 15 -m il e secti on . Haw kins co ul d not m ak e up the extr a po int and d ropped thr ee. T he C , Super Sen ior and W om en rid er s were all spared the n ext section . T h o se w ho did ha ve t o suffer M thro ugh the rock- infested 3 .6 -mile section were treated to some " ent ertainment" at the o pening check, in the form of a topless , bus t y f emale . Apparently th e eye candy did not di stract Lafferty ; he was th e on ly ride r to drop on ly two points at the check-out. Se vera l ri d er s pulled through w ith three po ints lost, incl ud ing Hawkins , Madore , Ho es s, Garrah an , Stav ish , McEach ern and Rick Claxton . Th e 6 m ile section was quite a handfu l for m o st , w ith a combinati on of r o cks, mud, roo ts and h ills . Michael Laffert y and Hawkins dropped only four po ints in th e te chnical, gr easy section . The next 5 -m il e section prov ed a little le ss d ema nd ing , but sti ll took two po ints fr om Lafferty , H aw k in s , Ho ess, N eff and J ason Cayer , who w er e f oll owed b y a h o st o f threes. A nother long , rocky sec tion th ro ug h t he A r c a d i a F o r e s t h e a d e d b a c k toward the start area in West Green wich . Aga in, La ff erty and Hawkins set the pac e w ith fo ur -point ca rds in the II-mile loop . Mad ore, Hoess, Gerra h an , St a v is h , Neff a nd Mc Eac he rn roost ed th rou g h with five ap iec e. He and Hawkins both smoked the course with only one po int lost. Only Hu sqvarn a's Hoess would co me close , w ith a two. After more than 7 112 hours and covering more than 10 7 ground miles, Michael Lafferty ga ined some ground in his quest for the AMA Acerbisl FM F National E n d u r o titl e. His 20 -point score put him well ahead of Hawkins ' 24. McEachern earn ed another A High Po int trophy w ith his 33 -p oi nt c ard . Cooper Ma cKitchre's 58 was en ough t o earn h im the B High Point , w h ile Dave McKowsky made it a High Po int "McSweep" by ta k ing the C High Point with a 4 2 on th e shortened course. Keith Goodell earned top honors in the Super Senior class , and Tom Far ley top ped t h e M a st er s class. B ev Sim c ock was the f a s t e s t in t h e Women 's class . Whi le Micha el Lafferty has a firm grip o n t he Ch amp ionsh ip, Neff has watc hed his po ints lead shrink to 12 o ver M ad ore.
