Trial master Rick Wolff la i d out seven sect ions sc atte r ed about th e PITS club's property in the High Sierras , li n ke d by a rock y , challeng ing loop. Parts of the loop proved to be m o re d ifficult than som e of the sec t ion s, and a defin ite workout for the Beg inn er (four-line) riders . Cont es ta nts were allowed to ride four loo ps, w it h the best t hree counting to w ar d th e day 's total - causing so m e revi sions in strategy . At first, it looked like it would be O lliges' day, as he m ade hi s first lap aro und the sections with only one dab , while Belvo ir carded a five . But Belvoir k ept a st iff upp er li p and made an err or - fr ee la p th e sec ond time o u t , whil e O llig es st rug g led t o a seven po int t ot a l. O n the Russell family farm , in the quaint agricultural com munity of Mill field, Racer Production's Jeff Russell presented t he season's first Buck ey e Motocross Championship Series race. When it w as time fo r the 250cc A cl ass to set off from th e gate, all eyes were o n G ib s o n a nd his red fou r st roke to see h o w he'd ma tch up against some stiff opposition from the Pros from Ohio and the rest of the Midwest. Although it seemed Gi bson had the start , C o m p et i t i o n Acces so ries-sponsored Mike Cam pbell had th e lead heading down th e lo ng downhi ll in to t h e seco nd corner. Gi bson began harassin g the YZ250 -mounted C amp bell , and he almos t t oo k over t he lead t hro ug h the tricky six -pack sec tion, and then again at the top of the hill surrounding the track . Chuck "Farrnboy " Reed was j ust a li ttle behin d th e d uo, o bservi ng t he goings-on from aboa rd his F& S Suzuki RM250 . Gib son t ried to pass Cam pb ell on the difficult "basem ent stairs" area on t he fa r side of th e track, but Ca mpbell h eld off the pesky Can non da le rider. By the time the y c am e around for the completion of lap one, though , Sunday Creek Motorsports Pari<: JeN Gibson (275) shot his Cannondale to the 250cc A overall victory at the opening round of the Buckeye State Motocross Championship Series in Millfield, Ohio.
