Saturday featured the Yamaha New York State Supercross Champion ship the ri ch est non -National event of the Y2K schedule, with more than $5000 up fo r g rabs - and it attra ct ed t he fastest professional motocross rac ers in th e East. Loca ls Bru ce Stratton , Paul Carpenter an d re cently " u nretire d" Chris Col eman vied fo r th e big pay ch ec k s aga inst a ho st of nation all y rank ed riders, incl uding Casey Johnson of th e Yam ah a o f T roy rac ing t eam , Barry Carsten , Ty Wallac e, Kevin Crine, Dav e Kratz and T ravis Preston. J ohnson led all but on e lap of the four -lap Dash For Ca sh after passing Kr atz and Carsten. J oh n son was fol lowed home by Wallace and Presto n. In the 125cc Supercross main event , J ohnson again berserked into the lead after a lap and looked set to sail away with the win. Carpe nter, spurred on by th e crowd, flew his Husky past Johnson for the lead and never let up . Johnson bailed half a lap later and didn 't rejoin the fray. Preston finished second, with Wallace third. In the 25 0cc m ain event, Maryland's Cr ine raced valiantly against Pennsyl vani a's Kratz. Th ey jos tle d for two laps before Crin e settl ed the issue, riding to an eventual 13 -second lead. Cr ine took th e win, ahead of Wallace, who wo rked his way up from a poor sta rt. The age le ss Carlo Co en le d briefl y but suc cum bed to his yo unger rivals. Th e wil y veteran pick ed up the pace in th e last two lap s to hold off a hard -charg in g Carsten . In the Amateur ranks, o nly o ne I sky , all th ree on Cobras. In 50 cc Shaft action , loc al rider Chad Gray beat out Br andon Wa ldon and Br ett McMi chael for the top honors. All of the SOcc riders raced only one moto, as the steep hills were too much for the little tikes and their littl e bik es. When all was sai d an d done, t he nearly 400 Amateurs who showed up to do battle for honor and glory and th e Pro riders who cam e fo r a chunk of the $ 6 00 0 pro purse we nt home happy. Even aga inst bigger bik es, Kiniry rode with bravado. On Sunday , t h e New York St at e Mo tocross Cha m pionship was held on Frozen O cean 's beautifu l, wide-open , natural -t errain track, which looks like Un ad illa when it wa s new . A $6000 pur se att racted a host of National pros and loca l privateers. K in iry again pro ved to be the most co nsistently fast rider at Frozen Ocean. The young m an from nearby Skaneate les won every single moto he entered to take the overall Schoolbo y, Mini Unlimited and Senior Min i victories with a dominance that none of his professional corn patri ots could mu ster. Co en won the fir st m oto of every class he raced: the 250cc Pro, the Over 25 Pro, and the Ov er 30 Pro. Inconsistency in th e seco nd motos - which were held in the rain - was his undoing. Th e K ra tz, with 4-1 m oto sc ores. After a poor start in mota one, the Husk y rider streaked thro ug h t he ranks until he to pped out at fourth pla ce. In moto two , after the rains came, Kratz rode the mu d like it was a dry track and left the field behind at the drop of th e gate. Carsten's 3 -3 moto sco re netted him second overall , and Stratton 's 6 -4 scores netted him the last podi um spot. First -m oto winner Coen did no t finish. The 250 cc B cla ss was dominated by Honda CR-mounted Jackson. His I I moto scores were com e-from -behind aff airs o ver Gl en Barlow and St ev en Edwards.
