BRIEFLY. •• Recent editio ns of·AMA V intage M ot orcycle Days East have been so pac ked wi th peopl e and mo torcycles and things to do that It"s hard to imagine the eve nt getti ng eve n larger. But the 2000 edition of V M D appeared to have do ne just that. Noticeably bigger was the Will Stoner Swap M eet, which sprawled acr oss even more of the acreage between M id-Ohio 's main access road and the shower building . Inte restingly , there were much more Japanese and Euro pean bikes and part s in the swap meet, with less British st uff and almo st no American. With aro und 1100 total entries last yea r, how ever. the trac k became dangerously crowded - especia lly during prac tice - and it was o bvious tha t any red-R stoppages o r other extended de lays co uld easi ly throw ag the prog ram into disarray . So for V M D '00, A HRMA ran a single round of its Pro gressive Suspension Historic Cu p Series over two day s, payi ng do uble poin ts as a concessio n to the ride rs . Wi th abo ut 530 entries , the resull was a much more relaxed pace to the program , wh ich fini shed we ll before the 5 p .m. raci ng deadline eac h day . Anot her race -related change was to move the location for the motocross circuit from the infie ld of the roa d co urse to a huge overflow parking area next to the Mi d-Ohio camping area . Al though the new loca tion doe sn 't have the hills and trees of the fo rmer site. it we nt over we ll with co mpe tito rs . And it also alleviated the co ncern of dust coat ing the road race track. The Penton Owners Group set a new standard for fea tured marque display s at VMD. The gro up 's tent was mor e of an educational mu seum di splay than a gathering toge ther of nicely restored examples of a brand . Inside were key Penton mod els and hist ori c machi nes . a video of Inte matio nal Six Days Trial action, engine cutaways. bare frames showing the evolution of the mac hines and hundreds of items of Penton memorabilia . not to mention J ohn Pent on himself autographing copi es of Ed Yo ungblood's excellent book. - Jo hn Pento n and the O ff-Road M otorcycle Revolution "
