Under the big Mo nta na sky on a wann, sunny day , m ore than 50 motorcycle riders had the opport un ity to christen the newly developed half- m ile full-cushion d irt track in fron t of 2000 cheering fans . To set the sta ge for this event. Orn o Spo rts Inc , and the Bill ings Mo to rcycle Cl ub pu lled o ut all the sto ps with a gra nd entra nce of nearly 100 Harley-Davidson riders. a vocali st singing the na tiona l an them, and fire works. A nd wh en th e riders took over, they gave the Mo nta na fans a show to remember. Larry Madrigal made the trip f ro m San Jose. California. afte r he ari ng he co u ld race on a half-mi le tr ack . Ric k Ho c k in q o f Li ve rmore, Ca li fo rnia, earned th e Mo st Ou tstan ding Rider tr oph y with his impressive runaway Spo rts ma n 60 0 victory by a half-a-straigh taway lead and took the checkered in Veteran Ov er 3 5 competi tio n on his famed 1975 BiJltaco. Th e '70s Singles cla ss prov ided th e m ost excitement of the night Ji m Monegan of Tw isp. Washington . and Billings native Brian Lehfeldt of Fort Collins. Colorado. raced for the flag neck and neck. Monegan took the lead by the first comer. Lehfeldt applied hard pressure early on but fell back a littl e on lap six. Just when it appea red M on egan wa s free and clea r, Lehfeldt cam e charging back and pulled close on the final comer before running out of track. as his final push fell short by the length of his front wheel. giving Mon· egan top hono rs. There was also a tight three-way battle for fourth . with Frank Hardman of Colorado Springs. Colorado. edging out Andy Kunz of Colorado Springs and Richard Clark of Missoula. Th e racers not o nly had hi gh prai se for the hospitality and fir st -cla ss ope ra tion of the org aniza ti o n, but also for th e new tr ack. In the Masters class , Steve Do na ld son sk ill full y secured his lead position as he flew o ver doubles and m ainta ined top speed for th e wi n . Gary Scheidler gave T ob i Taki qu it e a challenge when he took over th e lead on lap two and took cha rge ove r four more laps , but Taki managed to speed past and wrap up a seco nd -place finish. In mota two , Donaldso n was in a winning groove and di d everything rig ht for another first, and T ak i also had the winn ing action and brought in his secon d ove rall win. In Expert co mpetition, J im McCo nnell certainly looked like a sure win ner as he whizzed aro und th e tra ck . fl ying o ver all the dou bles. but on the very last lap Bill Sch ultz cam e fro m his fourth -pla ce start and gassed his Yamaha pa st the leader and seized the w in . McConnell foll owed him in with seco nd , and Paul Hec k m an came in th ird . The second m ot a was q u it e im pressive and very uncertain, with lots of changes . Dan Will enborg led the act ion until Schultz passed him on lap two . Schultz k ept hi s fast pace for five laps until Chris Cum bo flew pa st him ove r a double j um p , took over the lead and snared th e win . Schultz cro ssed over second fo r th e overa ll wi n , fo llowe d b y Hec kman in third . Heckma n was seco nd overall and Cu m bo wa s th ird overall , Ray Dru ry stayed ahe ad of all th e othe r Amateur s in a very tig ht race to win the top spot. Mellgren and Larry Wei sber g faced off in a du el that ro cked fo r th e en t ire rac e . Weis be rg p ressed Mellgren th rou gh every lap . probing for a wea kn ess while try ing to force a mistak e, but Mellg ren w as u n y i eld in g . Trailin g t he dynamic d uo up fro nt , Wes Totsubo and Bert Silos were loc ked in thei r own fray for th ird. In a last-lap dr ive. Weisberg failed to best Mell gren th ro ug h the tig ht com ers leading onto the m a in st raigh t . losing the drag rac e to th e c hec k ers. Silos g ot aro und T otsubo on th e penultimate lap and held off To tsubo 's last -lap charge fo r a well-earn ed th ird. In th e afte rnoon Vet era ns race, Mellg ren pulled out to a co m fortable lead ov er Totsubo. A lt ho ugh th e raci ng was tig ht between T ot subo, J eff Russell and Weisberg for seco nd , it lacked the energy of the m orning race . In the end, Mellgr en rod e to an easy win , with T ot su b o sec ond a n d Ru ssell t hird . In a l at e cha rg e, J ason Ta ka m oto p assed Silo s and Weisberg for fourth, Th e m orning 's Amateur 80cc GP race was a real scrappe r from the ge t- go bet ween Ed Sim on and Weisberg for th e lead , with Weisberg unre lenting thr oughout the race. In the clos ing lap s, Wei sberg tri ed unsucce ssfully to set up a pa ss on Simon in th e tight com plex of turns leading onto the m ain stra i g h t , d r o pp in g h i s b i k e in t he p roc ess .
