McMurren held a close line th ro ugh o ne and two, pulling ba ck ins ide o n the back straigh t to lead going through four. McMurren changed his line the next time thro ug h th re e , ru nn ing up a little high e r and taki ng Gou ld with him . Going into turn one, McMurre n pulled the twin bac k down to block Gould's charge up the inside and keep th e win as the pa ir cr ossed the stripe for th e fina l time . McMurren went a wa y with his second win of the da y. Gou ld wa s a close second , tra iled by J ennings, Knowles a nd Alan Girdler. Richa rd Po llock , St eve Fortune and J im Ros a led the las t race to be run on the Temecu la qua rte r-mile . Bob Co bb joined the battle, passing Rosa for third on the second lap , wh ile Keith Bradford was s lowed by th e ho le in turn th ree. Pollock 's YZ400 slid up high in turn two, a nd Fo rtune was right there to ta ke the s pot away . Bra dford and Rosa pushed through the tra ffic to take th ird fro m Cobb an d pulled in behind Pollock . Fortune co ntinued to hold the lead, but Polloc k closed in, le aving tire marks on the leade r's RS Honda in tum fou r. Polloc k held a close line com ing out of four to ta ke the lea d on the front straigh t, lea ving Bradford on Fortune 's tail. Cobb , now b y Ros a for fo urth , joine d the race for second as Bradford looked for traction around th e outside of Fortun e . Poll o c k c hecked out up front with th e white flag showing . "We went back a nd forth across the river a bout four times, " said Wood of the stream crossi ng . "It was maybe up to the footpegs - n ot lik e Wilseyville, where it' s ove r your seat! Th is wa s just right." Afte r being pressured for the first severa l laps , Wood hit his s trid e and put s ome d istanc e on the rest of the ra c e rs . "It wa s fun - like a n e nduro ," sa id Wood. "It' s m y first tim e here , and I loved the track. It's a good, te chnica l co urse. Th e first five mil es we re a ll t ight, firs t - a nd second -gear s ingl e tra ck. Th ere's a couple of places yo u can open it up a bit. It keeps yo u busy. There 's s ome s lic k roots in some o f th e d a rker t u rn s , ju s t hid ing in t he s ha de , so yo u ha ve to sta y o n yo ur toes wh en you go sla m mi n' the berms. It' s a tota lly 'heads up ,' th inking ra ce ." A lthough traction wa s prim e th roug h most of the track, there wer e a few s lick mudholes and some we c la y "g re a s y spots " in the tr ee s . Wood handled these difficult sections with aplomb , wh ere a s many others s lowe d , rode unsteadil y , bobbl ed or worse .
