Vet ri der supreme Scott Sh ip l ey continued his strong showings in Vet and 250cc Pro ra cing at h is hom e track. After a strong sixth-pla ce ride in the 25 0c c A class and then just barely losing th e Ove r 30 A -cl ass w in to Du rham , North Carolina's Brad Proc to r, Shipley fina lly go t his moment in th e sun . In the Over 3 5 cl ass, Ship ley m ad e a d oubl e m oto sw eep o f th e class over some to ugh com petitors. Sh ip ley has fo ught Vir gi nia Beach ' s Brad Cro uc h and YZ4 2 6 F pilot Russ Pickett to oth and nail throughout the series . Barry Nelson had th e ride of his season going after a strong hol eshot and three laps of lead ing th e fi eld , but Shipley wa s too mu ch for him. Shipley work ed h is wa y to th e fr ont, as did Crou ch and Pi ck ett. A s Shipl e y crossed th e li ne, Crouch was runn ing out of steam due to a bout with th e flu . Pickett made the best of it, taking second over Nelson. In m oto two , Shipley blasted awa y with a comfortable lead, just to make sure there was no question as to who wou ld g et the overa ll. Crou ch held on for sec ond, wh ich la nded him in that spo t overall , wh il e Pic kett p it ched his big -bore and had to pla y ca tch -up . Nelson put in an other fine ride and record ed h is sec ond thi rd -p lac e run for th e las t step on the podium. Pick ett worked bac k up to fourth. Th e course co nsi ste d of most of the same tra ils as in the past, but with loops of soft whoops and wid e lines to all ow p lenty of passin g. They eve n gave the rid ers a few n i c e , smooth sect ions b ef o re throwing them in to the ro cks . It was a fas t co urs e with no sto p pers. The ri de rs ran a short quarter-mil e loo p in the woods before h itting the j um p at the end of the starting area and cross ing behind the field and h eading back into to th e woods . It took less than 19 minutes for T imothy to complete the 5 .5 -m il e loop , with Levesqu e and Tom No rt on rig ht on his ta il. McNeil was back in fourth , down another 15 se conds , followed by Jesse Berth iaume. The top three stayed with in five to 10 seconds of each other for th e first half of the second lap.
