Johnson crashed his bike after ta ng ling with Carrera. "I followed h im [J ohn son I un til I was abl e to ree l h im in, " said Carrera when a s ked ho w he ma nag ed to pa ss Johnson , le aving litt le d oubt that fish ing is another of Carrera 's pa stimes. Afte r a ll t h e ma ins were run, the Ramblers hosted a specia l five-lap ra ce for a ll the ma in-e vent winners, billed as the "To p Gun" race. The trophy that was to be awarded was the ac tual tro phy won b y Graham at th e 1984 Sacramento Mile . Th e Graham fa m ily do na ted the trophy in honor of those who came to parti cipate. All the ma ine vent winners particip ated in hopes of winn ing the "Top Gun " tro phy . When the green fl a g wa s dr opp ed , Rod Spencer bo lted to the front. Dana Perri tried his hardest to reel in Spencer, but he could not match Spen cer's to rrid pace . When t he c hec ke re d fl a g dro pped, Spen c er cl a imed the "To p Gun " hon ors . After an emoti ona l victo ry lap , the "Top Gun " trophy was pre sented to Spencer . Ricky's older broth e r, Billy Graham, was on hand to make the pres en tation.
