In the first Scr at ch semi, King drew th e pole . Charlie "The Edge" Venegas was in tw o, looking to repeat his dou bl e w in from last week . Gary Ack royd loaded int o three , and Schwartz was on the outside. Venegas read th e gate and jumped into the lead, with Ack- T royd right behind him. King to ok full advantage of the b ig hole that had developed in four when Sch wa rt z launched into the wall . Veneg a s , us ing the outside, had no trouble tak ing home th e win , and Ackro yd was second. King and Schwartz moved on to the last -cha nce qu alifier. In the seco nd Sc rat c h sem i , the po le went to "F ast" Ed Castro , with Andy "T he Enforcer" Northrup in two and Oxley and " Dukie" Erm o lenk o in three and four. Erm ol enk o got a sta rt tha t pro ba bly surprised even him, bu t it gave hi m the lead and he went wire to wire, whi le Castro held off a hard charging No rthrup fo r the second and fina l direct tra ns fer to t h e main . Northrup and Ox ley wo uld have o ne more shot in the LC Q . In th e LCQ, N orthru p was on th e pol e, wi th O xley in tw o and Sc hwa rtz and King in th ree 'and fou r. T he ga te went to Schwartz. O xley was seco nd , try in g de sp eratel y to g et a w hee l under Schw artz. His c ha nce fin all y appear ed as th ey ca me o ut o f four and h eaded fo r the checkered , and the final sp ot in th e mai n was O xley 's by no more than th e w idth of a ti re . Castro drew the po le for the main ev ent. Ackro yd was in two, w ith Ermolenko in three . Oxley and Venegas were in four and five . The first start was called back when th e ref deemed the rid ers had anticipated the gate. They li ned up aga in , and th is time Ackroyd got into the tapes and was sent to the 20 -yard line. They lined up a th ird time, and Venegas got into the tapes; he joined Ackroyd on the 20. The fourth tr y was the charm. Oxley was out on top and down low on the blue groove. hugging the pole. Ermolen ko ju st couldn 't find the ch ink in Oxley 's armor; he took second . Castro was third . Venegas and Ack royd finish ed fourth and fifth . Mark Adams must have felt like th e Maytag repa irm an as he lined up on th e 10-yard lin e for the Handicap main event . Th e closest rider to him was Ch arli e Cool ey , who had the 30 all to him self. Th e 40 was a bit m ore c rowded , with Chris " T he Kid " Ma n chester , Randy "The Rocke t" D iFra n c e sc o , King and Jim E st es. Northrup was alone on the 50 , a nd Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell started from downtown Ana hei m (on the 60) . Adams went out on top and held on for two laps befo re King ran him down and took over the lead on lap three . McConnell got to th ird in one lap and was now runn ing second , tr y ing to force King into m aking a m ista ke; it j ust d idn 't ha ppen . McConnell also had his han ds fu ll with Northrup, who was rid ing his rea r wh eel, and Estes was pushing both of the m . Spencer Takes Top Gun KING CITY, CA, MAY 19 n hono; or" the lat e Ricky Graham , - the 'Sa ll~ a s Rambl ers -Moto ; cycle Club hosted their first Memorial ShortTrack Race in King Cit y . Graham was a three-t ime AMA Grand Nationa l Champion who perish ed unexpectedly in a fir e th at oc curre d in his Salinas Valle y home on January 22 , 1998. In memory of Graham. the Salinas Ram biers hosted their first AHRMA Vintage Short Track on May 19 . The race was he ld in conju nction with the an n ual Sa li nas Valley Fai r. Because of their first-time success in drawing ma ny devoted Vint age motorcycle race rs, the Ram blers hope to m ak e this race an ann ual event. I 40 Casta Mesa Speedway Casta Me sa, Califo rnia R GrahamMemorial Short Track icky Salinas Valley Fairgrounds B Y R O B E RT E M PA SI S Costa Mesa Speedway: Lance King won the Handicap main event in Costa Mesa, California. In the Sid ecars event , the pole w ent to Stuart Glass and Deion Stokes on the big Ducati. Bob Bra y ton and Dwayne K ing were in two on the Godden. Bill Matherson and Dale Leeder, aboard the Yamaha , were in three, and Alan Hall and Dirk Votaw, also Yamaha -mounted , were on the outside. They were almost two laps in , with Brayton and King leading , whe n the red flag came out and they lined up for a full restart . This time , Math erson and ' Leed er t ook th e fron t - running sp ot , w ith Bra yton and K ing second . On the second lap, the big Ducati with the 906 Paso motor t ook ov er second when Brayton and King got wide out of the c orn er. One lap later, Hall and Votaw got th e drive off th e corner and m ov ed into second . On th e fin al lap, Gla ss and Stok e s did a littl e stunt work o n th e back stra ight and end ed upsid e do wn ; Gl ass was on e luck y puppy, wi th no serious inj ury . Math er son an d Leeder cru ised home, with Ha ll an d Votaw second . Brayton and K ing ended up th ird. Krystal Cramer did it again in the J unior Speedw ay main, topping Miles Calvin , S k y le r Gra yson and Ju stin Boy le. This was Cramer's second win eN in as m an y races. T he race was hel d insid e the Fair g r ounds ' Ro pi ng A re n a on a we llg roo m ed c u sh io n trac k . The main eve n t d rew th e l a rg est crowds , as fa irgoers were drawn by the roar of the motorcycl es. Many of those pr esent had nev er experienced a shorttrack ra c in g e ve n t , and th ey were quite thrilled at all th e excitem ent as fans cheered for their favorit e rac er. The race was equall y exciting for many of th e pa rtic ipants. In th e Sportsman 600cc ra ce, Ric k Hocking bo lted to the lead , with brothers Rod and B rad Sp enc er in to w . It looked like Hocking had this race won on the cus hy track , as he was ab le to keep the brothers at bay . That all changed whe n the lead tr io caught up w ith some l a p p e r s.
