In the first Scr at ch semi, Bobby "Boo ga loo" Sc hwartz dr ew the po le, Venegas was in tw o, with "Ra d" Brad Oxley in th ree an d "Fast" Ed Castro in four. Schwartz c ut the best gate, with Venegas hot on his rear fende r, but Venegas couldn' t get a' w heel under h im in the q uick four -tap per. Schwartz and Venegas transferr ed to the main; Ox ley and Castro wou ld have one more shot in the last-chance qualifier. In t he se c o n d se mi. "Rocket " Randy DiFrancesc o was o n the pole. w ith Shawn "Ma d Dog " McConnell in tw o and "Fl yi n '" Ryan Fisher in three. " Gorgeous" Gary Hicks was o n the outs ide . O n the fir st try . the gate went to DiFrancesco. but as th ey came out of four , DiFrancesco parked it and McConnell and Hicks had nowh ere to go ; th ey got tangled up with McConn ell. ta king a na sty fall rig ht a t the finish lin e. O n the resta rt , Fis her touc hed t he ta pes an d was se nt to the pe na lty line. On the third try, the gate wen t to Hicks, a nd he went wire to wire for th e win . DiFrancesc o wa s second, sec u ri ng his sp ot in th e ma in . McConnell and Fisher moved to the LCo. McC on nell drew the po le for the LCQ. with F isher in two and Oxley and Castro in three and fou r. Both Hicks and Vene gas got away pr etty eve n ly bu t Hick s go t th ere fi rst. However, wi th only o ne lap in the books, Hicks lost his prima ry chai n a nd had to wat ch from the infield as Venegas held Oxley a t bay for the wi n . Sch wart z and DiFrancesco fi n- ished out the field. The Handicap main had everyone on long yardage. Th e 40-yard line was shared by Fish · er, Gary Ac kroyd and DiFra ncesco. "Dukle" Erm olenk o ha d the 50 a ll to himself. The 60 was crowded with Oxley, Venegas. Hicks and McCon nell. Fish e r bla s ted to the front, and Venegas was running second as they ca me around on one. Venegas applied pressure, but F ishe r h e ld h im of f fo r five la ps . As th e y crossed the finish line at th e start of th e sixth lap , Venegas got a wheel under Fisher and moved him off the groove to take over the front spot. Fisher hung on for second, with Hicks t h ird a nd McConnell four th . Ox ley, Erm ol en k o , Ackroyd a nd DiFr an c esc o fo l lowed. Stuart Glass and Deion Stokes wo n the Sidecar race .
