Co nlon put in a co nsistent ride for seco nd. Schueler was again th ird , followed by Bowlin, who rebounded from hi s fir st -m oto DNF to tak e fourth. After a poo r start. Crowe charged thro ugh the pa ck to fini sh fifth . Welch retumed later in the day to domi nate the 250cc A and O ver 25 A classes as w ell. Th e Op en Pro/Am cla ss is ope n to any bo dy o n an y m achine, and usually features th e best racing action of the da y . When th e gate dropped for th e fir st moto, Mal:! Racin g/MotoPr o -sponsored J osh Tupa t oo k th e lead, follow ed by Alba Yama ha 's Ton y Arn aradio and KTM -mounted Davi s. The lead tr io began to pull a lead over th e rest of the pac k, and at the con cl usion of the first lap , Tupa was still in the po int , A ma radio was sti ll all over him in second. an d Davis wa s sti ll hou nding Amaradio. On the thi rd lap, Davis went down in th e infield and lost co ntact with the two leaders. A maradio was giving Tu pa a run for his m oney; he trie d T -bo ni ng Tupe in the horseshoe co rne r o n a co u pl e of occasions . With only tw o la ps remaining. Amaradio stepped up the attack and wa s all over Tu pa 's red rear fender. Tupa was railing . and he di dn 't m iss a beat as he crossed the finish line righ t in fron t of Amaradio. Davis was a distant th ird . thou gh he was gai ni ng on the leade rs in th e clos ing lap s. Each of these riders had a cha nce at the overall. and the tensio n at the start of th e sec ond m ota was running high. When the gate hit the concrete. the pow erfu l four -stroke of Dav is captured the lead . Amara dio was second and Tupa was third. Davi s' lead lasted for one comer, as Amaradio and Tupa both got next to Davis jumping up Devil s Drop. Amaradio took the lead. Dav is was second and Tupa was third. As the pack careened down the downhill, Tupa passed Davis for second and set sail after Amaradio. With only two seco nds separating the lead tri o, it was anybod y's race. All three ride rs were on th e ragged edge on t he slick, blue-g roo ved circ uit. On th e fourth lap of the nin e-l ap event, Tupa almo st w ent down whil e nat -t ra ckin g th rough a slic k co me r. Davis soo n go t around and was the only rider hooking up on the co ncretelike surf ace . Amarad io was giving it his all wh en Davi s flew int o the lead. With Tu pa running in third. the overall wa s go ing to go to Dav is if he stay ed in the lead . B y T ONY A LESSI MADERA, CA, MAY 7 Ant hony Mancha manhand led the 2 50cc Novice riders with a pair of m oto victories and the overa ll class w in during CMA Su nd ay motocross at the Madera Fairgrou nds. It was apparent that Mancha had h is race face on, as he simply blew away the field with a wire-to-wire win in the open ing m oto , out· distancing the 250cc class and the othe r " big bike" racers by up to 30 seconds. In the second m oto , Ma ncha ha d co m pa ny afte r Mike Al essi (who was riding in the 125cc class ) gated seco nd and then leaned o n Mancha for abo ut th ree laps. " I do n't know if he mess ed up in a tum o r he let me by " A lessi said , "but once I got in fron t. I just pinn ed it. " Alessi ope ned up a gap of about eight second s in two laps and m aintain ed that di stance to the fi nish , while Mancha still held down at l ea st a 40 -sec ond le ad ov er 2 5 0 c c riders David Howell and Brando n Brad ford .
