The clu b laid ou t a 5 -mile course on a private , 100-acre a pple orcha rd owne d by Mark a nd Pa ul Pa lazzi. Th ere was a lot of two-lane traffic in the woods , with on ly yellow rib b o ns divi di ng th e course . Th e course cons iste d of hills cov e red with bl a c k mud a nd s hal e , with lot s o f rut s . An esti mat e d 100 co urse work ers were o n ha nd to kee p e ve rything running smoothly. By th e tim e th e Expert and Am a teu r e ve nt go t under wa y , the course was we ll b ro ken in . O ver ) 5 0 riders lined up in the field, with )3 AA riders on the fro nt row, inclu di ng Pa t ric k Timothy , Tom Norton, Chris Panzella , Brian Lawson, enduro champion Ha ns Neff, and GNCC rider Dave Gun n . When the flag dropped , Lawson and Timothy shot righ t off the line . Lawson was on the outside and went too wide . Timothy tucked in tight on the inside and grabbed th e ho leshot, with La wson , Dennis Decker , Bob Santheson and Nathan Kanney fa lling in behind. The trail took an immediate U-tum and ran back a long the field before jumping over a stone wall and into the woods . By the end of the first lap, Timothy had put almost 30 seconds on sec o nd -pl aced La wso n . Third place wa s now held by Norton . Santheson moved up to fourth , with Decker fifth . Pamella, who started dead last, was now in sixth. Not halfway into the second lap , the leaders started to encounter lappers , and the hills became a battlefield. "I had three riders crash into me on the second , th ird and fourth la ps," said Panzella , "all on d ifferent hills . They'd just s h o o t right out of the woods ac ross th e hills and T -bo ne right into you . You'd have to go back down the hill and try it a ga in." Th is was the story for most of the front -r un ne rs for the next fe w la ps , with man y rid e rs co ntin ually los ing positions . T his wo rked to T im oth y's a dva nta ge; he was just p inn ing it up every hill, hop ing th er e wa s a n open ho le in the m idd le of all th e riders. "I got stuck on one hill o n the seco nd la p and had to pu sh it over the top ," sa id Timothy. "I hadn't seen a ny other AA rider up to this po int , but by the t ime I got over the to p , I could he a r Dec ker be hind m e ." T im othy came a round at the end of th e s ec ond la p with jus t e ight seco nds o n Deck e r. La ws on was now in third , down a nother 40 seconds, with No rto n rig ht on h is rear wheel. Th e tw o riders c a me a ro und to th e final hill just befo re the barrels a nd it wa s str ew n with rid e rs . Lawson to o k the line up th e m idd le and immediatel y got taken down. Norto n wen t wide to the left and rod e right by , ro lling o ver th e sto ne wall before the ba rrels a nd into th ird pla c e . Lawson mana ged to ge t h is bik e unta ngled . on ly to go a nother 20 feet and get hung up with a nother pa c k of ride rs . (Le ft) Tom Nor1on placed second overall at round three of the AMAINETRA Hare Scrambles Se ries . PanzeJla was right there; he also to ok the outside line , cruising over the top a nd into fou rth p lace , with Law son coming around in fifth. The track continued to deteriorate as the race progressed , m ak ing for one of the toughest and most techn ic a l races in a long time. The only rest th e riders got was the small e ighth mile track through the apple orcha rd . Then it was back into the woods. By the end of the fifth lap . Timothy had increased his lead to three minutes over Norton. Pamella was back another 40 seconds in third , with Santheson , Decker an d Gunn battling it out for fifth. For t he final two laps. T im o t h y made no m ista kes a nd just held on to th e le a d . Norton gave it all he had on the fina l lap , m at ch ing Timothy 's la p time, but he was una ble to close the ga p. T imothy took his second win for the sea son with four m inute s on s ec o n d - p lace d No rto n . Panzella took third, down another minute . Fourth place was taken over on t he fina l la p by Ne ff, with La ws o n wor king h is way back up from nin th to take fifth ove ra ll for the day. The Expert-class High Point went to Chris Mooney , who spent most of his da y look ing at the rear fenders of J im Edmonds and J eff Staples. Mooney finally found the right line s on the s ixth lap and passed them both. By the end of the ra ce , he had put four m inutes on Edmonds to tak e the cl a s s High Point and ninth place ov erall . Expert 200cc rider Neil Denn ett was the sec ond Expert rider across the line. ta king firs t in the cl a s s and ) Oth overall. Edmonds wa s the only o ther Expert rider to complete all seven laps. ta king home the fi rst - p lace trophy in th e Expert 250cc class. Amateu r ra c e r Re g g ie Stevenso n took th e cla s s High Poin t and finis he d eN a very re s pe cta ble 20th overall.
