While the course had it s share of rocks and o bstacles. it offered c hall enges ran g in g from technical sin gle -tra ck and sa n d washes to tricky, rocky road s. At the start of th e fi rst race, fo r Experts a nd Ama teurs. Open -bik e rid er Greg Searl came ou t ahea d of a pack that incl uded 25 0cc ri de r Eddie M cCoy . fa c to ry-b acked T eam Green 250cc rider Shane Esposito, factory backed Hu sk y 250c c rid er Denn i s " Desert Fox" Beli ngheri. and Open rider Chris Barker. Key opted not to refuel before going o ut on the final lap; he paid the pri ce, running out of gas , By the time he wa s able to switch to reserve and restart hi s bike, McCoy and Esposito had passed him. The rac e was now betw een McCoy and Esposito for second ov erall. Using co nc entr ati on and smart lin es, Espos it o passed McCoy for second overall. How ever, h e wa s more than 10 feet off the course . whi ch cost hi m 10 positions - a decis ion th at was made fi nal by club officials after the race . In the end . Beli ngheri took first overall with a two -minute lead. Esposito was second overall, but his penalty pushed him back to 12th overa ll . McCoy, Key. Barker and Searl rou nd ed out the top five ov erall finishers . "Th e course wa s very rock y and tec hnical and made"co mplet e concentration apriority," noted Belingheri. " K eep ing a fa st pace wa s als o difficu lt at times, becau se there was no one cl ose behind to pu sh m e," The sec ond ra ce , fo r th e Novi ces , wa s anything but pred ictable. A s th e racers took off on thei r fir st lap. th e sk y opened up and it bega n to rain . Pristine tra cti on quickly turned to slippery conditions, and du e to the danger club officia ls decided to sto p the ra ce after o ne l ap . Th o ug h a few rid ers c rit ici zed th e cl ub's decision , many were gra teful to see the c hecke red flag when coming in fro m th e first lap. Over 3 0 rider Robert Mi lle r rode smartl y and co nse rv at ivel y despite th e weather a nd landed the overall in the Novice cla ss. Th e rac e did end with a bang fo r the bi g bik es, as fir st · time racer Mike Torzilli came into th e fini sh waving his hands to his p it crew H unt Moto Park: J oe Ellington (44 ), Pete Malyj (531) and Paul Austin (697) lead the 250cc Ex perts int o the firs t turn at Hunt Moto Pa rk in New York. Mau ser and Bashe r immedia te ly bega n to ar gue over th e poi nt positi on, as th e two riders rod e side by side fo r th e fir st few laps. Vanoor ney d idn't let th e du o get awa y ; he passed Benedict on lap four to m ove into thi rd . Yama ha rider Ryan Amarad io was making a charge after a bad start. and he m oved up to fifth by th e halfway mark. Mau ser rod e well , and his steady. mistak efree pa ce started to wear down Ba sher, as he o pened up a two-second lead lat e in the m oto. Vanoo mey co nti nued to m ov e forwa rd , and by th e time the white flag came out. he wa s right in Ba sher ' s shado w. O n the la st lap , Mau ser stayed strong and he took the m oto win, wh ile Van oorney fo u nd a way around Ba sh er for second pla ce . Benedict held on for fourth. and Amaradio too k a well -eamed fifth . On the da y , the overall cl ass victory went to Vanoorney by virtue of h is 1-2 finishes . T he ev ent, w h ic h start ed in the late 1980s as one of th e origi nal D unl op T ire Days, dr ew a reco rd turnout of 550 riders to t he n atural -terrain track , and class winners took home Dun lop tires for their efforts. The previous night's watering left the tr ack in exc ellent co nditio n , with many lines to choo se from . wh ich made fo r a gr eat da y of racing for all. Suz uki -m o unted D ieter swe p t all four m otos to take th e o ve rall wins in th e J 6-24 Combi ne d and 125 c c Exp ert cl asse s, w hile Kawasaki jo ckey Ma lyj won both O ver 25 A motos and was second to Dieter in each 125 Expert moto. Th is set th e stag e fo r the m ain cl ass of the da y - the 250cc Ex pert clas s. Joe Ellington grabbed th e hol esho t in the first 250cc Ex pert m oto, with Mal yj and Paul Aust in cl ose behind. Ell ington dropped ba ck to fourth. Starting in fifth, Dieter m oved into the lead after dicing w it h Ma lyj and Austin. Di eter p ull ed o ut to a com fo rt ab le lead and took th e win , with Malyj in seco nd and Au stin in third. Ma lyj was qui ckest off th e lin e in m ota two, with D on Schm id t an d Di et er in h is roo st. Ellington was a close fo urt h. At the ha lfway poi nt of th e m ote, the three lead ers wer e nev er m or e tha n four seconds apa rt. bu t Malyj did not let the pr essure get to him; he wou ld pull away , and the n lose som e grou nd to Schmidt .
