MI, APR. 16 Th e second race of th e Michigan Hare Scram b les Seri es w as attended by a rather larg e crowd of 333 competitors. Th e Portland Tr ail Ride rs co m p letely revamped th e c1 ubgrounds and course, wh ich was j us t sh y of 4 miles lo ng: t he terrain w as f amilia r (d ee p sa nd , hard -clay ground) but wa s sm oo ther th an in the past (no bottomless whoops ). Lowe Rac ing/Pi relli Tire s/P lanet Honda 's Clint Sumner used hi s motocross sk ill s t o dominate the 125cc field , leading from the thi rd co m er and nev er looking back . Fo llowing the Hond a-m ounted Sumner was last yea r's 125cc cha m pion , Aa ro n Weg ner, who ca me bac k full force after a disappoi nting app ear ance in roun d one. The th ird and fourth posi ti on s ove rall were a repeat of last weekend 's event, with Kawasak i-mount ed Syd Gallt getti ng the nod ahea d of Enduro Engineer ingl Lansing Cycle/Moose/Cla rk e/ Amsoil- suppo rt ed Corey Calkins. Fift h overall went to FMF / Scott USA/Honda of Troy 's Scott Barcl ay. Th e Vet class delivered some of th e cl osest competi tion on the day. Spro cket Spe cia li st/ MSR /Moti on Pro - spo ns ored Scott Cu rtiss grabbed th e holeshot. Paul Guy, Steve Willey, Tom Enzor and Cli nt Hammerle followed. Curtiss was able to sneak thr ough all the bottlene cks with ease; th e rest weren 't so lu cky . Once th ey exited th e woods, the Vets brok e into gr oups, tr ying to catch Curti ss. On t he fourth lap, Curtiss tan gled with a slower rider and dropped from fir st to fourth . The compe titiv e co m bat that followed had many spec ta tors running to different poi nts on the tr ack to chee r o n their favo rite rid er s. A t th is po int, Oakland Sport Center' s KT M 250 -mounted Will ey pulled away from Guy and Hammerle to a lead of almos t th ree m inutes. Kawasaki jockey Gu y and Yamaha -mounted Ham m erl e co nti nued to battl e for the nex t five la ps , swap ping the l ead a n umber o f ti mes . With one hour to go , Th or Racing's Guy went on an amaz ing cha rge , pick ing up 10 or 20 seco nds per lap. In credib ly , Gu y caught and th en passed Will ey wi th two lap s to go . Will ey stayed close, but on the last lap he had to stop and sw itch his bik e to reserv e. Guy took the win, finishing 4 5 seconds ahea d of Willey. The alway s-improving Hammerle took t h ird. Earl y lead er Cu rt iss was fourth , and Yama ha- mo unted Mark Spore was fifth. "What a racel " Gu y said aft er the race. "I didn 't kno w if I would catc h St eve. I ju st go t the bike four week s ago , and I really haven't figu red ou t the suspension yet. Last week end I reall y got beat up. I've been tal ki ng to Brad Low e at Lowe Racin g. and he 's start ing to help me getting thing s figured out." · C liffside McDo nald and Wats on roundi ng out th e top five. In the second m oto , Swin k jumped into the lead , with Woods on his hee ls. Once agai n the pair left the rest of the fie ld in a different ti me zo ne , setting an unto uch ab le pa ce . Sw ink pulled a three-second lead over Woods by th e end of lap one. Woods stayed strong. th ough; th e two disa ppe are d beh ind the hills, and it was Wood s who emerged in the lead. Woods m oto red off to th e win , leaving Swink in h is dust. Buono finished third, followed by Frank J ungnitsch and Watso n. " I just made a few m ist ak es , and I was really tired," said Swink. "Th e bike wasn' t run ning very well. either. I'm using these local races as practice for the u pcoming 125cc Outdoor Nationals. Glen Helen's in two weeks. and I'm just going to try and get back in the swing of things." At noon, th e blu e flag was raised , signaling th e riders to " shut 'em down ." The exciteme nt was building, but yo u co uld hear a pin drop as referee Bru ce Snyder recited th e riders' pray er. After the prayer, local singer Devina Price sang an enth usiastic ren dition of the national anthem. Th en 97 bik es r o ared to life as t h e race rs fi red up t hei r machines. T he rac er s we re allowed two o r th ree minutes of warmup time befo re they had to " shut 'e m down" for the fina l tim e before the start of the first wave . When the green flag was finally raised, the seve n rid ers of the Open A cla ss fir ed up their e ng i n es an d sta rt ed towa rd t he first tu rn . which send s th e rac er s into Cliffside's sm all motoc ro ss sect io n. On e highlight of th e start was John Rut herford' s "fl ying W· lan ding on t he first do uble j ump , which put him almost last. The leader at the end of th e first lap was Ronnie Burnfield on his Suzuki DR400-Z. He had com pleted the first lap of the tough 7.2m ile course in 22 minutes and 54 seconds , wh ich wo uld stand as the da y 's fastest lap time . Bu rn fi eld he ld nearly a 2 1/2 -minute lead over th e second -p laced racer, Kaw asaki jocke y Brett Zofch ak . Rutherford had moved his KTM back up to fourth place. Howe ver, second -wave racer Davi d Bittner, riding in the Vet A class . wa s ga in ing ground fast and was n ot to be denied th e wi n. Throughout the rem aind er of the race, Bittner tumed consistentl y good lap times on his Honda . By ke ep ing his lap times betw een 2 1 and 23 minutes, Bittner eventually picked his way throu gh th e Op en A riders and joined in battl e with the top fi ve race rs. On the final la p , Bittner made two critic al passes, overtaking both Bum fieid and Zofchak and taking the lead . In the end, Bittner was th e victor, Zofc hak ended up second, Rutherford had worked his way bac k up to thi rd, Ja mes Roberson fi nis hed fourth, and Michael Bu rk ended up fifth . T he top fi ve finishers ove rall were ha nd somel y rewa rded fo r the ir ef fo rts with their appropri ate share of the $700 purs e, which was provided by the Westem Maryland Off Road Riders: Bittner was awarded $2 10, Zo f c ha k $ 17 5 , Ruth erfo rd $ 14 0 , J am e s Roberson $105, and Michael Burk $70. In th e fir st 250cc A moto , tw o-time eastern Super cr oss c ha m pion Brian Swi nk stole th e holeshot and quickly opened up a tw o -second l ead ove r W o od s . J a son M cDon a ld a nd Richard Watson. By the end of lap two, Woods still had Swink in his sig hts , but Watson was m o re t h a n 30 secon ds b a c k . Swi nk and Woods conti nued to blitz the rest of the field until Woods fell on the last lap , handing Swi nk an easy victory. " It was rough out t here." said t he DG Y Kawasaki /Pro-Ci rcuit- backed Wood s after the race. "The 250 is a lot harder to handl e in tha t deep sand. I j ust need to get a good start and I shou ldn't have any problems ." Wood s got his sta rt in the second m oto , pass ing Joe Kersanty fo r th e lead in tum two . Swink got off to a bad start and had to play catch -up. By the end of lap one, Wood s held a 15 -second lead ove r Wat son , John Buon o and Swin k . At the end of lap tw o. Swink m ov ed into seco nd, but Woo ds was long go ne. Wood s cruised to an easy vi ct ory ove r Swink, Buo no and Ryan Lockhart. The fir st 125cc A m ot o belo nged to Wood s and Swink, who pull ed a hug e lead on the rest of th e pa ck within th e fir st lap . Sw ink m an aged to keep Wood s wi thin str ik ing distan ce th e enti re race, but he never quite go t a wh eel in on th e leader. Wood s won , with Swink close behind.
