With one lap to go , Curran made his m ove and cl aimed second at the checkers. AP Design s/Moto Pro -ba cked Tag Gasparian also m ade a lat e-m ota charge. The former pr o su rfe r wo rk ed his way thro ugh t he fiel d to claim thi rd. "Th e track was grea t," enthused Gasparian. "I d ig the new layout. I just wi sh I cou ld clea r a few of th e bigger jum ps." 'Mota two was every bit as com petiti ve as m oto one, and it ca me down to the final tum to dec ide the overa ll o n the da y. Sta rts agai n proved to be very important , and Goert m ade a state me nt , putting hi s YZ at the head of the cl ass. A t th e end of lap one, the running order wa s Goe rl. Don Reed, Cur ran and Gaspa ria n, with m oto-on e winn er Mac huga run ning sixth . A s th e wind s beg an to p ic k up, th e rac in g act ion intensi fied , and the overall was still up for grabs. Th e top fiv e were wh eel to wheel throu gh o ut the ent ire m ot a . With the lap s w inding down , Machu ga m ov ed up to the rea r wheel of C u r ra n, who wa s a l lo ve r Re ed . C u rra n c ouldn't see m to ge t a ro u nd Reed, but he did n't h ave t o as long as M achuga staye d behind him. On the last lap , th e three leaders were separate d by inch es as they ex ited th e last tum before the fini sh. Goerl took th e m oto vi ct ory , with Reed the ru nner-up. In th e end , Cu rran ' s thi rd was good enough to take the ove rall . "I knew I d idn 't have to pass Reed as long as I kept Machuga behind m e," ex pla ine d a winded Curran. Ma chuga settled for second overall , with Gas paria n securi ng th ird ove rall on the day. of snow throughout most of the sta te . Due to the cold weather and the snow, ma ny riders sta yed home, but 165 rid ers braved the elem ents and att end ed the event, Fact ory Ga s Gas ride r Blair Bersano to ok th e hol esh ot in th e '25 0cc cla ss and led th e enti re contes t. By the co m pleti on of th e fi rst lap , Blair had caught the 1998 and 1999 district cham p ion , Ka wasaki jockey Chri s Gallt, and the duo began to pull away fro m th e rest of th e fie ld, Co llege Bi ke' s Gallt had a smooth ride, fi nish ing second ove ra ll and fir st in th e 125cc class . Bersano ' s day almost ca me to an end at the halfwa y po int. While att empting a doubl e, Bl air ca me up short and crashed hard. Bla ir had to m ake an eme rgency trip to the pits to grab a new set of goggl es and th en head ed back ou t on to the tra il . On the fourth lap , thin g s started to g et inter esting betw een K aw asaki -mounted Syd Gallt and Endur o En gin eering/FMF/Moo se/ Cl arke/Lansing Cy cle 's KTM-m ounted Corey Calki ns. At th e start, Calkin s had slid o ut in the fourth co mer, and he had to work his way up thr ough traffi c. On ce he ca ught Syd Gallt , the tw o batt led all the way to the end . l./WTEN< I.
