BRIEFLY••• If anyone had a reason to be upset with the fact that the Fonnula USA transponders had failed du ring qualifying. then it pro bably wo uld have been Ceo R oede r II . Desprte the fact that the track wasn' t four -foot -deep pea gravel. Roe der scrambled around the track - wit h the benefit of a little motivation from Jay Springsteen - to a time of 21.2 78 seconds, accord ing to the announceme nts that were being made on the PA syste m during the qualifying sessions . Of course, that lime was lost when the com puter crashed. " It' s disappointing. but oh we ll. " Roeder said. " I still think that the transponders are the way to go. I like 'ern, but I just want 'em to wo rk." A s for t he trap speeds at Texas M ot or Sp eedw ay . it w as announced that members of the mo torcycl e patrol division of the Fort W ort h Police Departm ent were in atte ndance. and had decid ed to radar the race machines whil e parked on their patrol bikes in the inf ield . PACE Motor Spo rts held a rat her classy banquet on the evening before the Forth W ort h race in order to introd uce the riders to th e o ff icia ls who will be handling the W rench ead .com National D irt Track Series and to lay out the company 's plans for the sport . " For PACE to be back in dirt track is a huge acco mplishment. but it is going to take more than Roy Jansson or Gary Becker or myse lf being involved to take this sport to the nex t level. As the polesitter , J ay Springsteen got the biggest boom s when his name wa s announced . Fan e nt husiasm was apparent ly in abunda nce at Texas M otor Speedway. PAC E M ot or Sport s quoted an atte ndance figure of 7600 . though the actu al figure may have been clo ser to 5000. S till . the c row d seemed to be pumped up for the ent ire night . some thing that wa sn 't los t on Wi ll Davis . " M an. can you hear those people?" Davis said. " I have never heard a crow d scream and holler like that at a dirt trac k before. I don't know what they're doing. but the fans are screaming from one end to the other. I'll tell yo u what. these PACE peop le know how to ente rta in the fans. it' s like it ' s a Saturday night . and these people wan t to turn it loo se, man. This is awesom e.
