After two laps of roost, Swink was tired of it and pushed Penrod wide in the fast starting·line sweeper to open up the inside line and take the lead. Tech-Care/Sir Pizza rider Jason McDonald was a lonely third. Rich Sheering and Chad Miller fought it out over fourth and fifth. In moto two, McDonald, on his booming four~stroke, nailed the holeshot. with Derek Rose, Penrod and Swink in hot pursuit. Penrod and Swink renewed their first~moto battle. both of them pushing past Rose before the end of lap two, and soon they had McDonald in their sights. On lap three. Swink used an old~school inside/outside move to suck Penrod back to third. Now only McDonald was between Swink and a perfect day of racing. McDonald held off Swink for more than a lap, but Swink was not to be denied. and he passed McDonald with just five turns remain~ ing in the race. McDonald held down second, with Penrod third for third overall on the day. While most people's attention was on the leaders, the battle over fourth, fifth and sixth was a humdinger. Holeshot man Rose held firm in fourth. despite Jeremy Hughson and Tommy Barron trying hard to take it away. On the white-flag lap, Rose had a four-second lead on Hughson, with Barron just a heartbeat back; both Hughson and Barron were looking to finish in the top five at any cost. Barron squared off Log Road's tricky off-camber turn COUNTRY, BAITLE IT OUT FOR A $10,000 PURSE ON ALCOHOL POWERED 500cc MOTORCYCLES WITH NO BRAKES t GOLD COUNTR.Y FAIR.GR.OUNDS AUBURN. CA..
