Goldendale Euro GP Russell Rustles Up a Win By TORY BRIGGS GOLDENDALE, WA, MAR, 12 A significant new race was added to the Northwest Motorcycle Association's 2000 OffRoad Series that allows Washington racers to go head to head with Oregon riders. Located just north of the border in central Washington, and hosted by the Over The Bars Gang, led by Scott Doubravsky, the "Euro GP" course ran up, down, across and around a hilly section of grassy farmland. At least 30 feet wide every· where, the loamy soil was almost entirely rock-free. A few steep hills and more than 30 natural-terrain jumps added thrills to the track, effectively countering the bummer of several serious, bike· swallowing bogs and mudholes. It seemed the key showdown would proba· bly involve three riders, all KTM-supported: Spokane's Peter Russell and Oregon's Rick Bozarth have both national-level speed and experience with the race, and Washington's Jason Dahners has the same speed and extensive national experience. And, given the outdoor-motocross nature of the race (although about 2.5 hours long), several other riders were capable of causing an upset, including Kevin Bailey, Brian Bennett, Aaron Wilson, Scott Mclaughlin, David Lykke, Rob Flagler, John Beal and Gary Furrenes. The Amateur classes ran four laps on the nearly 7 -mile loop. Troy Joiner notched the overall win, followed by Aaron Veitch, Brian Oas, Myke Lindis and Tom Sweuringen. Veter· an Amateur winner Mike Bronn flew by in sixth overall, followed by Senior Amateur vic· tor Todd Wolfe, in one of the best races of his life. Ryan Bigbee, Reynoir Peterson and John Frederick rounded out the top 10. Flagler nabbed the holeshot as the Experts began their afternoon seven-lap event, with Bailey in hot pursuit. Beal quickly dispatched both and began to extend a lead, only to kick a hay bale in a corner and add a second fracture to an already broken small bone in his lower leg and retire, By the end of the first lap, Russell had taken the point, with Dahners in tow. Bozarth, Flagler, Mclaughlin, Furrenes, Wilson, Bennett, Lykke and Bailey were all over each other. By the third lap, Bozarth had set up shop in third. McLaughlin, Bennett, Furrenes, Fla· gler and Wilson still swapped positions regularly. Lykke was slipping back, his 125 getting killed in the power-robbing conditions, and Bailey also encountered difficulty. Over the last third of the race, Dahners pressed as hard as he could, which led to a couple of get-ofts, while Russell was clicking off perfect laps. McLaughlin also hit the ground a couple times, Bozarth ran out of gas, and Furrenes charged into third. Meanwhile, Joe Wade, in his first AA year, made his patented late charge, picking off the back half of the top 10. Bennett's piston came apart as he was making his move into third. Russell scored a dominating win. Dahners finished a strong second, followed by Furrenes, McLaughlin, Wade and Bozarth, who made a nice recovery after refilling his empty tank. In the end, the Washington offroad crew carried the day, taking eight of the top 10 positions and winning the majority of the classes. r----------------------,'" co co a: CD >- § ~ ~ :I: Q.
