MAR. 19 The warm weather seemed to agree with Marty Moates, who powered his thundering YZ thumper to the overall victory in the Over 40 Expert division at the Southland Racing Association's monthly meeting, held at the legendary Carlsbad Raceway. The warm conditions quickly dried out the track, leaving the track slick and dusty, which put an extra importance on the holeshot. Brad Oxley took the holeshot. Jeff Surwall gated second, with Moates on his heels in third. Craig Staley and Craig Adams rounded out the top five. As the field doubled back toward the starting line. Surwall controlled the lead. Moates moved up a position into second. Adams moved from fifth to third, dropping former leader Oxley to fourth. Tom Knapp trailed in fifth. Surwall continued to hold a slim margin over Moates as the pack headed toward the motocross track. Moates' continuous pressure got the best of Surwall on the motocross track. Moates thundered down the drag strip in the lead. The Kawasaki-mounted Surwall trailed four seconds behind in second. Knapp picked up two positions to move into third. Despite the dusty conditions. Bob Maxwell came from a lastplace start to move into fourth, and Oxley rounded out the top five. Moates continued to pull away as the race hit the midpoint. Surwall remained in second. The Honda-mounted Maxwell swapped positions with Knapp to move into third and was beginning to pressure Surwall. Knapp and Oxley rounded out the top five. Moates remained at the helm, but the battle for second between Surwall and Maxwell allowed the duo to pull to within five seconds of Moates. As the race entered the later stages. Moates continued to control the top spot. The battle for second continued between Surwall and Maxwell. Maxwell got around Surwall for second on the motocross track and headed after Moates. Moates started the final circuit with a seven-second margin over Maxwell. Surwall trailed a distant third. with Oxley and Knapp rounding out the top five. With the checkers waiting, Moates raced down the drag strip for the final time to secure the win. Maxwell took a well-earned second.
