Austin Daugher- SUGAR GROVE, OH, MAR. 25 Suzuki· mounted Brad Strunk, a professional motocross racer from Williamsburg, Kentucky. cruised to two class wins during COCR's opening day of springtime motocross. With an overflow turnout of 359 racers . an unusually large gathering for a Saturday event - the lengthy motocross circuit was wellprepped and slightly altered from the 1999 edition. Most riders seemed to appreciate the improvements. The first 125cc A mota featured a beautiful start by Strunk, as he took the lead early with Perris, California's Steve Andrich falling in behind and Duane Evans battling Jason Frecker for third. Strunk rode hard, consistent laps and strengthened his lead over Andrich. Evans displaced Frecker for third. The top ty (Cob). 65: I. Codi AckJms (KTM); 2. Kyle Smith (KTM); 3. In moto two, upstart Duane Evans - a relatively new name in Ohio Pro-class racing instantly jammed his Yamaha into the lead and never looked back. He took the win handily over second-placed Strunk and thirdplaced Frecker. Evans and Frecker saw action in the 16-24 class, as well. Evans found the finish line quicker than Frecker in both races, posting a terrific 1-1 tally over Frecker's 2-2. In the 250cc A class, Strunk stuffed both moto wins into his pocket by virtue of dominant riding and impressive starts; Strunk was, quite simply, smoother and much faster than everyone else on this day. Zanesville's Mike "The Bike" Campbell rode remarkably well; the Competition Accessories-sponsored Yamaha racer was spectacular in his fast and consistent 2-2 finishes behind Strunk in this nine-rider field. Another fast Yamaha pilot, Bub Thomas, showed why he is quickly becoming a contender in the District 11 A class: His 5-3 postings netted him third on the day. In B-class racing, it was Nick Nuttle doing the damage. His dominance was only slightly hampered by a crash in moto two of the 125cc B class, and he finished with a I-I I score; however, he went 1-1 in the 250cc B contest. The very fast and vastly improved Nathan Skaggs has found the speed on a 125 to his liking: His 2-1 postings netted him the 125cc B overall. In Mini action, Cedi Adams was often the fastest young man on the track. He rode his KTM to 2- 1 finishes and netted the overall in the 65cc class, and he piloted his Kawasaki KXBO to second overall in the Mini Junior division with a strong 1-4 ride. Aaron Kline shook off his third-place first-moto result in this class to dominate mota two and take the win and, ultimately, the overall. FE.S Suzuki-sponsored Michael Willard showed why he is still considered by many to be one of the nation's hottest young 80cc pilots. The local racer styled his way to four 44 APRIL 26. 2000' cue I :I: Q. Tony Allen and Barry Rempel, were also a threat. Allen and Sean Wilson shared the holeshot, reaching the gaping, muddy pond side by side after a 1DO-yard sprint from a dead-engine start. McLaughlin made his way to the front in fairly short order, and Bailey and Furrenes took positions in the lead group as well. It didn't even take one lap for Dahners to dispatch them all, howe",er, and he stretched out a six-minute margin over the remainder of the 2.5·hour event. Bailey worked his way into second after settling down and being more patient with his passes, but he could not close the gap. The third through sixth positions weren't decided until the last lap. as Aaron Wilson, Mclaughlin, Furrenes, Flagler and Bennett duked it out intensely. Bennett's RM 125 melted down under the strain and a low float setting, McLaughlin hit the ground a few times too many, and Wilson had to overcome a rear flat for the last of the five laps accomplished, for a final order of Wilson, Furrenes, Flagler and Mclaughlin. Aside from the AA crew, there were several impressive performances and intense battles. Jeff adam, starting his 1996 CR 125 from the second wave in the 200cc A class, raged all the way up to ninth overall. In the Vet Experts. it took a desperate last-lap pass by David Huyhn to eke out the victory over fellow Skagit Powersports teammate Steve Cobb. Some 233 racers competed in the Mount Baker Me event, held on private Crown Pacific timberland, and Dana Johnson and family essentially pulled the whole thing off themselves. The loop included every nasty bit of terrain for which the Pacific Northwest is famous, including a lengthy and steep "brakes don't work" downhill. It was easily the "Event of the Century." The Wild Bunch MC Hare Scrambles Gosnell Times Two By CHARUE SETCHELL GOODSPRINGS, NV, MAR. 18 Matt Gosnell took the overall and first Open Expert at the MRAN Wild Bunch MC Hare Scrambles, held in Goodsprings, Nevada. Round two of MRAN's 12-stop tour of the Nevada desert was a well-thought-out and organized three-loop, 75-mile course, over some almost perfect desert terrain. After the start, everyone was funneled into a tight single-track wash, The course then opened up into some fourth·gear cross-grain that was perfect for passing, followed by some sand washes and a couple of road crossings. Gosnell made up for a bad start by working his way through the whole pack and then holding on to win. MRAN newcomer Sonny Morgan came up from Arizona to give the Nevada desert a go and finished second overall. Team T-Racer's Kellon Walch was also impressive on his Husqvarna CR250, getting third overall and first 125cc Expert. MRAN president Scott Morris managed fourth overall, first Expert Four-Stroke. Fifth overall went to Dave Fry, while Best In the Desert ironman champion Cory Ayers overcame a brutal start crash that left him dead last to finish sixth overall, first Over 30 Expert. Also making an appearance at this event was former MRAN number-one plate holder Russell Pearson. The Yamaha-mounted Pearson was not racing for points, but was tuning up for the upcoming BITD Terrible's Town 250. In the 80cc race, it was Gosnell again - or rather, it was Zach Gosnell, Matt's brother. While the younger Gosnell had the lead from start to finish, and Danny Church piloted his Suzuki to second, the real racing was behind them, for the third spot. Jerry Parsons and Jessie Canepa diced back and forth for the entire two loops, with Parsons coming out on top for third place. Results 50 NOV: I. Brandon Brown (Cob): 2. Dylan Hansen (lml): 3.
