There was one fifth-gear straight right before the finish-line turn, and Weeks pulled alongside Anders as they went into it. Weeks outpowered and outbraked Anders to earn the runner-up position by a wheel. Reynolds and Southard rounded out the top five. In the AA 200cc class, Matt Forsythe, on a North Texas Yamaha, made the highlight reel with a firstturn get-off, but that didn't matter much, as Forsythe blasted through the pack and into the lead the first time by the barrels. He continued to motor away, leading every lap and taking the victory nearly two minutes ahead of Danny Elmore. Barry Stanley took home third. eN Bonita Cross Country: Haydn Franklin (P20) topped the Pro class at the Bonita Cross Country event in St. Jo, Texas Texas Cross Country Racing Association Series Round 2: Bonita Cross Country Franklin Finds the Key at Bonita CC By DARRYL SMITH ST.JO,TX,~R. M 12 idweek rain and beautiful skies made for perfect racing weather as 660 riders converged near St. Jo in north Texas for round two of the Texas Cross Country Racing Association series. Promoter Dan Burch was suffering from a broken collarbone after running into a horse at Baja, but he still pulled out the 'dozer and the tractor to work over some of the more than 13 miles of sandy trail. Burch's work didn't last long, as Saturday's practice churned up plenty of deep whoops. The extra-long loops and the deep sand made pit stops a must, even for the bikes with large tanks. When the green flag dropped for the Pro race, Dean Lane powered his Cycle Town South Husaberg to a clean holeshot. As the pack sorted itself out, the race became a Cycle Town affair with the KTMs of Clay Hoenshell and Haydn Franklin settling in not too far behind Lane. Ardmore Kawasaki's Eric Hillhouse controlled the fourth spot. Lane led the biggest part of the first two laps before letting the KTMs by. Hoenshell took over the lead, and Franklin stayed within a turn or two of Hoenshell throughout laps two and three. Lane managed to run down Franklin on lap three to retake second. After everyone pitted going into the fourth and final lap, Franklin was now in control, with Hoenshell 20 feet off his flank. It looked like it would be a perfect sprint to the finish, but it wasn't to be. Hoenshell had not taken on enough fuel, and his 250 ran dry midway through the last lap, ending his day. Lane also emptied his tank but found a donation and made it back to the line in fifth, just ahead of David Culpepper. Franklin, on the other hand, got to enjoy an easy ride to the checkered flag for his first win. Several riders benefited from the gas shortage and their own consistent riding. Brian Storrie worked his way up from eighth place on the first lap to fifth after three laps. Storrie passed Jeremy Fipps on the last lap to get the runner-up position. Fipps held on to take the last step on the podium, while Hillhouse ended the day where he started - in fourth. In the AA 250cc ranks, Oliver Benitis made it look easy on his KX250, coming home with an uncontested win. Benitis led every lap, taking the win by a one-minute margin. The rest of the pack swapped positions like crazy on the white-flag lap. Tracy Anders was running second for most of the race and had a 20-second advantage over Bert Reynolds, who looked comfortable in third, with 30 seconds on Bobby Southard. Bryan Cook was another 10 seconds back, with Mark Weeks not far behind in sixth. Weeks gained five places and more than a minute in one lap, making the pass on Cook early in the lap and then passing Southard for fourth while he pitted. Southard charged back, but a broken silencer ended his day. Weeks, a teenager, was at this point chasing riders who were all over 30. He passed Reynolds later in the loop, and Reynolds didn't have any energy left to hammer the final whoops and make a race of it. By the last half mile, Weeks had Bonita Cross Country SL Jo, Texas Results: March 12, ZOOO [Round ZI 125 AM: 1. Chris Wrobel (Yam); 2. T.C. Langley (Yam); 3. Jesse Pembroke (Yam); 4. CMC Copperstate Classic Stadiumcross Series Round 2: Arizona State Fairgrounds Buckelew Takes Home a FeW' Bucks Supercross series," commented Pingree. "The track is safe for everyone," Buckelew added, "but it also has technical sections to help with our timing. This event is good for the local riders to improve their Supercross skills, and it was good for me to get some more racing time against someone like Pingree and Campbell." Pingree outdragged everyone to the first corner to grab the early lead. Ted Campbell was second, followed by Buckelew and Brandon Schlensig, who just moved up from the Intermediate class. Buckelew doubled up onto the plateau jump and passed Campbell for second. By the end of the first lap, Pingree had a two-second lead on Buckelew, followed by Campbell and Schlensig. By ROBERT VAN DAMME PHOENIX, AZ, MAR. 5 U5tin Buckelew and Chris Blose won the 125cc Pro and 80cc (1213) classes, respectively, at the second round of the CMC Copperstate Classic Stadiumcross Series. Franklin & Associates put up the $2500 purse for the 125cc Pros, hoping to attract some of the 125cc West Supercross riders who were on an extended brea k while the series ran back east for three more weeks. 125cc West points leader David Pingree took second overall in the 125cc Pro contest, with third going to Phoenix's own Ted Campbell. "[The] track was great and the rain helped in the first moto, and it's good to race something, because we have such a long break in the 125cc West J cue I e n e _ 50 • APRIL ~9, 2000 57
