With the appearance of Bonds on Sunday, Holland knew he would have company up front. While Holland grabbed the holeshot in the first 125cc Pro moto, Bonds loomed in fourth temporarily. By the second lap, Bonds was all over Holland and eventually passed him for the lead. As the race wore on, Bonds flat out left HoIland behind to take the win. Jeff Northrop and Scott Davis both had motos they would rather forget. Davis, who was running a strong fourth and charging, pulled over about halfway through with motor gremlins. Northrop, who had been battling with Davis, also had problems, as his Kawasaki's front wheel found a hole in the whoop section, sending him over the bars. Northrop was slow to get up, having had the wind knocked out of him. He eventually remounted and headed into the pits, deciding to call it a day. In the first 250cc Pro moto, Bonds got off to a less-than-desirable start, but that didn't really matter, as the leaders quickly dropped like flies. First Holland, who had gotten the holeshot, went down in the first lefthander, handing the lead to Pestana, who promptly followed suit, going down moments later. Davis inherited the lead. Meanwhile, Bonds was making up ground in a hurry, and he quickly caught Davis and made his way by. Earlier, in the 125cc Pro moto, Bonds had been flying through the whoop section, and he was going even faster in this moto, but right after passing Davis, near the end of the whoop section, his back end suddenly kicked up high, promptly faceplanting him into the last whoop. Bonds lay face down for quite some time, but eventually he began to move to the side of the track. He later complained of a sore shoulder and blurry vision, and he wisely called it a day. Meanwhile, Davis and Walters were battling up front, with Walters getting the eventual win. Holland remounted from his early crash for a respectable third. With Bonds gone, Holland went on to a second-moto victory in the 125cc Pro class, which, coupled with his second in the first moto, gave him the overall on the day. Although he also won the second 250cc Pro moto, Holland's third-place finish in the first moto meant that Walters got the overall via a 1-2 score. SFI Winter MX Series North Round 5: Oatfield Raceway Davis Digs Deep ,------------------------------------,Ul o z w w a: w ~ ;; D Z ... "" > ,,'" § a. Oatfield Raceway: Scott Davis (85) put in consistent performances for the overall win· his first at Oatfield - in the 250cc Pro class in Turlock, California. Bv JIM AND VALERIE ENOS TORLOCK,CA, MAR. 19 fter being plagued by numerous rain-outs, the 2000 Northern GFI Winter MX Series finally came to an end at Oatfield Raceway, and Lamson Porting/Works Connection/ O'Neal rider Scott Davis closed out the series with a win in the 250cc Pro class. Although he didn't win a moto on the day, a consistent 2-2 moto score was good enough for the overall win, and it was a special one for Davis, since it was his first ever at Oatfield Raceway. "It works for me," said Davis. "I've never won an overall here as a Pro rider, and I rode two strong motos today. It definitely feels good." Suzuki pilot Rusty Holland took care of business in the 125cc Pro class. Holland, who rarely loses a race at Oatfield, smoked both 125cc motos, but two crashes in the first 250cc moto left him with a 4-1 tally a score that was still good enough for second overall. The first 250cc moto was a wild one, with Carmichael resident Brian Roth getting out front early on. Although not a regular at Oatfield, you would never know it, as Roth looked fast, quickly puttin.g distance on Jon Nelson and Holland. Roth's dominance came to a sudden end, though, as two crashes put him out of A the running. Nelson inherited the lead, and with Holland hot on his tail, the two came into the tight left-hander following the finish-line jump side by side. However, Holland had way too much speed and as he hit the braking bumps; his bike went into a vicious swap, resulting in a spectacular crash into the hay bales. While Holland remounted, Davis and Jeff Pestana chased Nelson down, with Davis eventually making his way past Pestana and then Nelson for the lead. Holland's misfortunes were not yet over: He went down again midway through the moto while trying to get by Kawasaki jockey Craig Truglio for third place. Up front, Davis and Pestana swapped the lead several times. Pestana, aboard a Clawson MotorS ports/ A - Ride/Sh ift/Fox -backed Suzuki, finally took the lead for good and went on to win, with Davis just a few bike lengths behind. Truglio made his wa'y past Nelson and held off Holland for third. Nelson rounded out the top five. "I rode pretty conservative early on because it was so soft out there," said Pestana. "But then, when me and Davis started mixing it up, I decided I'd better kick it in, and with Rusty going down, I think I've got a good chance at the overall." Moto two was an all-Holland affair.
