Old Crow Hare Scrambles Carnegie Cycle Park By W. H. SPENCER LIVERMORE, CA, MAR. 5 ~eam Green's Craig Wesner bat~tled with former D-36 champs Steve Silvestri and Cole Marshall to win the Redneck Roosters Me's 13th running of the Old Crow Hare Scram- bles at Carnegie Cycle Park. The twohour affair had a good turnout of nearly 200 A and B riders, and Brian Sperle led the first-row contingent off the gate. Recent rains left traction at a premium, with a 9.6-mile course that most agreed was just marvelous. Wesner, Silvestri and Marshall were very close to each other from just past the halfway point of the first lap on, with Marshall taking the lead on a borrowed 1998 YZF400. "The bike belongs to the Mandarino family, and I appreciate them lending me this ride," said Marshall later. "I like it, and I can ride what I want now." Marshall suffered a rear flat on the next lap, but he still did a great job of holding on for third. "There wasn't much I could do, so I just stayed out and ran it cool," explained the Aftershocks/Smith Goggles-sponsored rider. Silvestri started the year with a new mount - he now rides for KTM and despite having to stop one more time than Wesner, he made up for it with some fancy riding. "We all had a good run with each other," said Silvestri, who had battled from the start of lap two with Wesner, holding off the youngster through the motocross section. "The last lap was something! I saw him at the back check and was closing in, but [it was] no go. He did a great job." Wesner left the start of lap five with just 25 minutes to go and running right on 25 minutes. At the twohour mark, the checkers flew, and just 20 seconds iater Wesner was in, so he didn't have to decide on whether or not to ride a sixth lap and take that chance. Silvestri had pitted his Fox/MoPro/ Braking/Redwood City KTM and left camp 1 1/2 minutes in arrears on that last lap and was scored at the checkers with a 2:01 :01 to Wesner's :00:22, just under 40 seconds behind in one lap. Damien Galford was fourth overall and the third 250cc rider, behind Wesner and Silvestri, with Brian Butler fourth in the overall .and the winner in the 200cc A class. Glenn Martinson was sixth, and second to Marshall in the 4-Stroke A class, while Johnny Mason was seventh and first Vet on his kid's YZ125. Early leader Sperle was eighth overall and fourth in the 250cc A class, with Garrett Binns ninth and second Vet A. Travis Sluder rounded out the top 10 overall and was second in the 200cc A division. Dave Wood was next in line, winning the Senior A division, while John Webster was 12th and first B rider, winning the 250cc class. Wesner thanked his grandparents for pitting him.
