SETRA/MSR Enduro Series Round 10: Sandlapper Enduro year, the Columbia Enduro Riders donated close to $1000 to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. More than 400 riders signed up to race. Rain a few days before made for almost dustfree conditions, and the temperatures were pleasant all day. Wyman believes in a lot of checks, and he likes to check you in and out of a section; there was no riding early at this race. Very few roads were used, and then only to connect sections. With all the trail miles, there were a good many resets to give everyone a break. The trails were mostly sandy with fast switchbacks and a few fields here and there. Some sections had tight, handlebar-width stuff. It was mostly flat with no bogs, hills or bottlenecks. As round lOin the series, it was also the "unofficial" start of Bike Week for the SETRA crowd, and this race got the thumbs-up from anyone who rode it. Last year, young Virginia rider Stephen Edmondson sneaked up on SETRA veteran Allen Gravitt and snatched the win from him. This year another Virginian, Answer/ Scott/A leo Motorcycles/ Havoline/ Pirelli-backed Daniel Morrison, did the same. Morrison, riding a Gas Gas 250 XC, posted a score of nine for his win, and he won by mere seconds. "It was a fun race," Morrison said, "one of the best I've been to. I loved it. This was my first time riding my new bike, and it took a bit of getting used to; it turns a lot better than my old bike." The Scott/Fox/ Arai/Enduro Engineering/Michelin-backed Gravitt, on his usual KTM 200 EXC mount, and Maxxis/Moose's Michael Grizzle, on a Husaberg 501, also dropped nine points. They both settled for second overa II; it seems they tied their scores 56 APRIL 12, 2000' cue I the section that would give Morris the win. Grizzle and Gravitt tied with a 3:20 each. Then it was just a few short miles to the gas stop. The next few sections were long but easy, and none of the top riders dropped any points. At 90 miles there was another 1O-mile section that took two points from each of the top four AA riders. The next section, at the 113-mile mark, was only five miles long but it was probably the tightest of the race. It claimed two points from Morrison, Gravitt and Grizzle. Hines dropped three. Two more sections were left, covering a little over 20 miles, and neither Morrison, Hines, Gravitt or Grizzle dropped any points. It was a very close race, with just a few seconds separating the top four riders. Heading to Daytona for the Alligator, Gravitt is in the top spot in the SETRA Enduro points race. A good finish at the Alligator could hand him the championship. eN Mike Grizzle (above) and Allen Gravitt (right) tied exactly for second overall O/A: Daniel Morrison. AA: (TIE) 1. Skip Wyman has been involved in the Sandlapper for as long as can be remembered, usually as trail boss. Skip supervises all the layout duties, and it is quite an effort to layout the course, as more than 40 different land owners are involved. The race starts at the Hollow Creek Fire Department in the very small town of Salley, South Carolina. The race raises money for the fire department, and it's their only fund raiser. Also, this e n e uv s The first check came at nine miles. Everyone was good and warmed up when they got to the check. The section was 11 miles long and had some of the tighter, more difficult trail of the race. Morrison posted the fast time with a 2:17. Gravitt and Grizzle each dropped a 2:23. Hines dropped 3:53. The next two sections were easy zeroes. At the 52-mile mark came the check-in for a tough 10-miler. This time it was Hines on the gas, posting a two-point loss in the section.
