AMA Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scrambles Series Round 11 Froman Forges His First Win By DEBBIE ALLEN LINTON, KY, MAR. 12 he West Kentucky Trail Riders rallied 313 riders for round 11 of the Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scramble Series, and there were several new faces on the Pro-class starting line at the AMA/Pirelli Tires/Moose Off-Road/Parts Unlimited-sponsored event. Former 200cc A rider Chad Froman and former 250cc/Open A series champion P.A. Allen decided to tryout their skills in the AA lineup. It paid off: Froman came in first overall, while Allen finished second on his Sarge's Cycles Suzuki RM. "This was the first time I ever rode in the Pro class!" exclaimed the River City Cycles/Cycle Path/DR-sponsored Froman. "I wanted to check out the routine, because I didn't know if I could ride with them." Froman took his time taking the lead. He was fifth off the start and merely kept up with the seven AA riders during the first half of the race. After realizing that he could do this, he challenged the AA leaders for the remaining two laps. Off the start, John Maschino pulled the lead around the first two corners, claimed the holeshot, and led his competition for the first three laps, during which everyone stayed fairly close. At first, Allen, Gary Hendricks and Lance Smith battled directly behind Maschino, but Robbie King made a grab for second place by the end of the first lap. "Once King got around me," said Allen, "it took me two laps to get back around him." The first two laps, Maschino, King and Allen came through the score tent in that order. Hendricks moved back to fifth place due to an injury sustained at Okeechobee, while Froman gained confidence and moved up to fourth place. On the third lap, there was a mishap that could've been disastrous. Froman survived it and took over first. "I don't know exactly what happened," explained the OffRoad Group/ TM/Bridgestone/Race Tech/ Xtremesupported Maschino, "but somewhere on an uphill, a lapped rider tried to pass me. My bike kicked sideways, and I almost ran into Froman." Froman's version of the story was slightly different. "At the bottom of an uphill, Maschino was closing in on a lapped rider," Froman said. "I think he hit a T rock, suddenly spun around, and drove his TM towards me!" Froman moved out of the way and made a quick pass for the lead; Maschino went down. Maschino remounted in time to salvage second place; but directly after the score tent, Allen moved into second when Maschino stopped for gas. Froman stayed in the lead until the Oakley/Pro Action of Kentucky/FMFsponsored Allen grabbed him on the last lap. While rounding a curve, Froman took the inside line and a lapped rider took the middle rut. Allen never eased up on the outside curve, and he passed both at the same time. "I knew I was a goner when Allen passed me," admitted Froman. "I thought it was over." Then, a mile from the finish, a lapped rider brake-checked Allen, and Allen hit the rider. Froman moved through the score tent first, with Allen barreling through two seconds later. Maschino came in third overall. Team Kawasaki's Mike McCrea, the 200cc A series champion, grabbed fourth overall. Performance Cycles/KTM-backed Clay Hedgepath was the first 200cc A rider to go into the woods, and he held his lead for the first two laps. On the third lap, McCrea picked up the pace, and with no more mistakes, he claimed first place in the class. Alan Westerfield claimed first in the 250cc/Open A class, and seventh overall. He was followed by FourStroke A winner Clint Robinson, Billy Cooper (who placed second in 250cc/Open A), and Steve Ezell, who rode his Suzuki into first place in the Vet A class and 10th overall. Phillip Barker claimed first in the Senior A class, and Ronald Skipper grabbed first in the 250cc B class. Some 59 riders made five laps on the 10-mile track, which was laid out by Bobby and Jesse Thomas and the West Kentucky Trail Riders. The track was mostly tight woods, which made it difficult to pass. The overall winner of the Youth race was Cody Miller, the son of Ricky Miller, who came in fifth in the Senior B class. Cody raced in the 80cc (911) class, against 11 competitors. eN Mid-South Winter Hare-Scramble Series Linton, Kentucky Results: March 12, 2000 (Round 111 O/A: 1. Chad Froman (KTM); 2. P.A. When the riders came through the infield, the white flag was waving and Keefe was pulling away from Spencer. At the finish, Keefe took the mota victory, and Johnson made the move past Spencer to take second place. When the gate dropped for the second mota, Kawasaki jockey Spencer was out front, with Keefe in second and Johnson in third. The track had dried out and the temperature had risen to the mid-70s. Keefe kept Spencer honest, but he knew he would get the overall victory if he finished second. Spencer took the win and second overall on the day. Keefe settled for second in the moto for the overall victory, and Johnson came across third for third overall. The aD Beginner class was a dogfight between Adams, Luke Tracy and Mario Guerrero. The first-mote holeshot went to Adams, who was looking like the man to beat. Guerrero was running a comfortable second, ahead of Kyle Morrison. Tracy was in fourth, making up for a bad start. Adams looked comfortable out front, but the man on the move was Tracy, who waited until the very final lap to pass Guerrero and Adams for the lead and the mota win. A dejected Adams finished second, and Guerrero was third. The second mota looked like a repeat of the first moto. Adams pulled the holeshot, ahead of Guerrero, and Tracy was in third. Adams put in five hard-charging laps to cross the line ahead of Guerrero and Tracy. Results 80 BEG: 1. Kyle Adams (Kaw): 2. Mnrio Guerrero (Hon): 3. Luke Tracy (Han). 80 NOV: I. Tyler Keefe (Yam): 2. Carlsbad Raceway: Tyler Keefe (5) flies off a jump on his way to the first-moto victory in the BOcc Novice class in Carlsbad, California. Carlsbad Raceway Keefe Catches Fire By KIRK CHANDLER CARLSBAD,CA,FEB.26 It was Mini Day at Carlsbad Raceway during round four of the six-round MotoPro CMXR Winter Series. Tyler Keefe took the victory in the aocc Novice class, while Kyle Adams took the checkers in the Beginner class. When the gate fell for the first moto, the entire Novice class screamed into the first turn and made the climb up Devils Drop. As the pack emerged from the trees on the back uphill, Yamaha-mounted Zach Johnson was ahead of Brandon Spencer and Keefe. As the pack dropped into the infield portion of the track, the order was the same. Spencer pressured Johnson, and Keefe seemed to be wait· ing for a mistake from the leaders. When the pack came back into view, Spencer had dismissed Johnson from the front spot and was looking to pull away. cue I e 250 BEG: I. Galen Wilson (Han): 2. Jerry Shapiro (Yam): 3.
