Glen Helen Raceway Park James Jimmies the SRA GP Win By DAVE DAIN SAN BENARDINO, CA, FEB. 27 The cold, damp conditions did not seem to hamper Robbie James as he earned a welldeserved victory in the Over 30 Amateur division at the Southland Racing Association's monthly Gran Prix, hosted by Glen Helen Raceway Park. Jerry Jetton got the jump off the gate and led the field into the first corner. Darrell Statham gated second, followed by James, Carl Fischer and Amie Davis. Jetton held the lead as the field funneled into the rocky sand wash. While the riders were out of view. the top five underwent a face lift. Jetton was the first to come back into view. James followed on his heels in second. Gary Lacy. Jason Ingersol and Todd Broussard rounded out the top five. James continued to hound Jetton for the lead. James made his move with an aggressive block-pass in the l80-degree lefthander by the clock tower. Jetton made several attempts to regain the top spot before he fell off the pace. Lacy maintained his thirdplace position. Broussard and Ingersol swapped positions in fourth and fifth. 80 BEG: I. Brad Houd: 2. Nathan Strong; 3. Ricky J.am6; 4. Chris rmvis; 5. Jordan Moneymaker, the 1999 KTMXA Points Series 250cc A champion, pestered Metcalf in both motos but couldn't quiet hold the pace, finishing only a couple of seconds behind Metcalf in both races. Metcalf went home with across-the-board wins in all four 125cc A and 250cc A motos. "I moved to Kentucky with my girlfriend," Metcalf said, "and this is the first time I've been to Apex. I really like the track. The dirt's real good. The jumps are fun. It's a real good layout. It's got a lot of elevation change. It's definitely got some trying cornering and some real good jumps to practice staying low on. It suits me just fine. I like it a lot." Chris Grissom of Suzuki of Paris and Chris Grissom Racing has been keeping an eye on Metcalf and helping him out, since MetcaJrs home is only a 20·minute drive from Grissom's business in Paris. Tennessee. Based on his experience of keeping up with regional talents who show promise and potential, Grissom noted that he hasn't seen a young racer with all of the mental and physicai attributes necessary to make it to the top in a good long while, but that he sees these qualities in Nick Metcalf. "If Metcalf keeps moving in the direction that he's moving, it won't be long before you'll see him begin to show up in the top of the standings in the National Supercross Series and Outdoor Series," Grissom predicted. "Granted, he may not be another McGrath . 25.: I. KeIth lewIS (Yam): 2. Marty Stinnett (Hen): 3. Eddie Proffitt (Kaw): 4. Craig FruIt (Hon); 5 Kevin F'tekis (Yam). 30.. A: I. Kevin Lewis (Yam). 30. Gatorback Cycle Park James Stewart Stars at Gatorback By KYLE MYERS GAINESVILLE. FL, MAR. 5 Unbelievable is the only word that could be used to describe James Stewart's demolition of the competition at the Unlimited/Dunlop Spring National held at Gatorback Cycle Park during Bike Week 2000. Stewart, on his Team Green/Fox/Oakley/Pro Circuit KX I 00, won all four motos of the Supermini and 125cc Youth classes. Just over 200 riders from 17 states and Japan competed on this warm winter day. The 125cc Youth and 16-24 classes started on the same gate but were scored separately. When the gate dropped, 26 riders blasted into the first turn. Stewart started around sixth. but halfway into the opening lap he had control of the race. With each passing lap, Stewart added to his lead over Kyle Garro and Justin Brusseau, who finished first and second """-~~~-"""r-..",--,......------'~---------------,, z ~ w a: ~~~~~I ~ ~ ~ Apex Valley Raceway: Jordan Moneymaker (1) takes the holeshot in the second 250cc A moto in White Plains, Kentucky, ahead of Nick Metcalf (117), Duke Martin (718), Geof Travis (24), Russell Hall (8) and Derek Smith (869). With the Suzuki-mounted James beginning to pull away, the action behind him was heat· ing up. Lacy got around Jetton for second, dropping the former leader to third. Fourth and fifth were now occupied by David Bauer and Jim Henn. James continued to enjoy a lO·sec· ond lead. Lacy held second. Bauer and Henn remained locked in a battle for third and fourth, with Statham moving back into the top five. James maintained his lead at the 30· minute mark, but his lead had been reduced to five seconds. Henn was the man on the move; he picked off Bauer for third, and then Lacy for second. Bauer followed Henn around Lacy for third, dropping Lacy to fourth. With three laps remaining, James had his hands full. Henn pulled to within bike lengths of the leader. A rejuvenated Lacy moved around Bauer for third and was within four sec· onds of Henn. James took the white flag with Henn and Lacy on his rear tire. The trio of riders circled the track on the final lap within bike lengths of each other. James continued to maintain his slim lead as they headed toward the high·speed canyon section; Henn remained on his rear tire. Lacy fell off the pace siightly. With the checkers waving, James held on for the win. Henn took a well·deserved second, followed by Lacy in third. Statham moved around Bauer late in the race to claim fourth, sending Bauer back to fifth. Re.ults PIW: I. Kyle Vare; 2. David Smith; 3. Cert Felton; 4. Jesse Ferguson: 5. Devon Ferguson. 60: I. SCREWS WHrTE PLAINS, KY, MAR. 5 Nick Metcalf, a St. Louis PowerSports-sponsored speedster from Murray, Kentucky, came to Ezell Sports Promotions' season opener at Apex Valley Raceway to try out the track he'd heard so much about. An up·and·coming con· tender on both the national indoor and outdoor circuits, Metcalf tumed heads - and split-second.lap times around the eight·tenths·of·a·mile layout - as he took the other racers to school. Metcalf pulled the holeshot in two out of four motos in the 125cc A and 250cc A classes. Metcalf then made short work out of such notable riders as Geof Travis, Duke Martin and Derek Smith (in 125cc A) and Jordan Moneymaker and Marty Stinnett (in 250cc A). Martin led Metcalf for a lap and a half in the first 125cc A moto, but, in a wooded section of the circuit known as the Magic Forest, Metcalf made his move and exited the woods with the lead. n e _ s but who will? Garro finished second in the 16-24 for the overall. Stewart also competed in the Supermini division. He easily won both motos over John· son and Bob Kiniry.
