Motorama Indoor Races and Speed Show Harrisburg Farm Show Complex Albany Motorsports Park: Ryan Metzler (333) beat the combined Pro-class contestants in his 250cc Intermediate-class win at the Albany Supercross opener in Oregon. He also won both 125cc Intermediate-class motos. zler's, posting wins in the 250cc and Over 30 Pro classes; however, in both 250cc motos, the Suzuki rider from Eugene followed in Metzler's roost. Had Graves not been involved in a first-turn pileup in the opening 250cc Pro/Intermediate-class moto, the outcome might have been different, but Graves forged through traffic in both motos to catch the talented teenager, although Metzler had an answer for all of the veteran's challenges. Graves grabbed the lead at the start of the first 250cc Pro/Intermediate moto, but he triggered a large pileup (which also included the entire Proclass field). This left Metzler, who had gated well among the Professional riders, with a lead that he would maintain from that point on. Metzler opened up a huge lead over fellow Intermediate Mike Smith early on, but Graves came from a quarter-lap back to close in on Metzler in the later stages. Another of the five fallen Pro riders, Jason Matthews, followed Graves through the traffic and moved into the top four - where he finished, behind Metzler, Graves and Smith - while Pros Mike Hamness and Gary Terlecki charged to finish close behind at moto's end. Metzler was equally impressive in moto two. Graves quickly moved up to challenge Metzler, but Metzler constantly slammed the door shut on Graves' challenges to pull off the day's shocker, his Intermediate-class win. -Graves earned the top Pro-class money, leading Smith (the secondplace Intermediate) and Pros Hamness, Matthews, Terlecki and heavily favored Ryan Leach, who had a tough day, finishing as the fifth-placed Pro with 5-5 performances. Trailing Metzler in the Intermediate-class tally were Smith (2-2), Nick Foister (4-3), Joe Brockway (5-5) and Chris Bennett (7 -4). Leach was the top rider in the combined Open Pro/125cc Intermediate class, as the YZ426F pilot thumped to a 1- 1 win to salvage what had been up to that point a frustrating day for the local rider. Metzler hung closest to Leach to make a sweep of the Intermediate class, ending his day on a high note. Smith trailed Metzler across the finish for second Intermediate, followed by Joey Mancuso (33), Dale Ainslie (4-4), Matt Williams (5-5) and Tyler Mockridge, sixth with B-7 placings. Graves later came back to top KTM-backed Gary Beyer in his 1-1 win of the Over 30 Pro class to finalize his two-class decimation. David Germain finished third with 3-3 placings. Former factory Honda rider Ron Sun, now piloting a KTM, led much of the first Over 40 Pro moto, but the dominant rider in the class, Dean Johnson, picked off Sun in the later stages to score a moto-one win. Johnson overtook KTM rider Carl Chadwick early on in moto two to take a lead he'd never relinquish, while Sun charged through traffic to net second and second overall, ahead of Glynn Higgins (4-4), Mitch Kirkpatrick (3-5) and Dan Kauffman (7-3). Hamness scored an impressive win in the first Up The Hill (Over 25) moto, ahead of John Sabo and Terlecki, but the Honda-mounted Hamness couldn't match the pace set by Yentzer magnificent at MotoralIla By JIM P. Schueler's front tire washed out and he went down but quickly remounted in fourth. When the checkers flew, it was Dickson out front, with Yentzer, Bear, Schueler and Brown trailing. Kevin Brodsky nailed the holeshot in the second 125cc Expert heat race. In tow were Jim Mcilvaine, Michael Hall, Jeremy Cook and Bo Bowman. The top five remained virtually unchanged through lap three until Cook and Bowman passed Hall for third and fourth. Brodsky won, followed by Mcilvaine, Cook, Bowman and Eric Swartwood. Yentzer seemed to have the edge going into the first turn of the 125cc Expert main, but Mcilvaine quickly shot by on the inside for the lead. Rounding out the top five were Brodsky, Schueler and Bowman. By the end of the first lap, Mcilvaine and Yentzer were side by side going over the big double. Each turned to look at the other while in the air, to the delight of the crowd. Yentzer passed Mcilvaine in the next section. Brown passed Bowman for fifth on lap two. By the start of lap three, Yentzer had begun to put some distance between himself and Mcilvaine. On lap four, the leaders had to deal with lapped traffic. Just then, there was a big pileup. Yentzer managed to get around the mess, as did Mcilvaine. Schueler managed to capitalize on the situation and passed Brodsky for third, with Dickson moving up to fifth. When Yentzer was given the twolaps-to-go signal, he had a nine-second advantage. Schueler and Brodsky mounted a last-lap charge and SANDERSON HARRISBURG, PA, FEB. 19 onda pilot Jeff Yentzer easily topped the podium in the 125 and 250cc Expert classes before a packed house at the 22nd annual Motorama Indoor Races and Speed Show at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex. The racing was fast and furious, with plenty of bar-to-bar action. Yentzer easily qualified for the two main events with second- and fourth-place finishes. Motorama, the largest event of its kind in Northeastern Pennsylvania, features a speed show, short-track racing, go-kart racing, radio-controlled-car racing, trials competition and exhibition, the Miss Motorama beauty pageant, and two days of arenacross racing. The combined attendance for the three-day event was over 30,000. Just fewer than 500 riders signed up to race 22 classes. Heat races were run to reduce the field in each class to 20 racers. Some classes had only one heat race, with all riders entered advancing to the main, while the larger classes had three-heats. Due to time constraints, no semis were run, so the heat races alone determined who would earn a gate in the main events. Christopher Brown earned the holeshot honors in the first 125cc Expert heat race, but Joe Schueler quickly took the point position away. Rounding out the top five were Michael Bear, Yentzer and Gaylon Dickson Jr. Dickson passed Yentzer for fourth by the start of lap two. H eye I e n e vv s • MARCH 29,2000 49
