passed Mcilvaine, dropping him back to fourth. Dickson ran a consistent fifth. Yentzer took the victory, followed by Schueler, Brodsky, Mcilvaine and Dickson. Dickson earned holeshot honors in the first 250cc Expert heat race, trailed by Joe Ellington, Todd Stith, Bear and Tim Schmelyun. By the third lap, Dickson was pulling away from the field, with Schmelyun, Brodsky, Schueler and Stith in tow. Dickson won, followed by Brodsky, Schmelyun, Yentzer and Schueler. Shelby Reitz was the first pilot through the first turn in the second 250cc Expert heat race, but he was quickly passed by a hard-charging Jeremy Cook, who finished the 1999 season at the top of the Amateur class in District 6 points. This was one of Cook's first races of the 2000 season as an Expert. If this race was any indication, Cook will do very well in the Expert class. Cook began to pull away by the end of the second lap, taking the checkers ahead of Schueler, Huston, Mcilvaine and Reitz. Dickson managed to duplicate the great start he had in his heat race in the 250cc main, trailed by SchmeIyun, Yentzer, Brodsky and Schueler. Yentzer made the pass for the lead in the small whoop section at the start of lap two. Dickson now found himself in second and being pressured by a hard-charging Brodsky. Schmelyun dropped to fourth and Schueler was a consistent fifth. The top five started to spread out, and they remained the same for laps three, four and five. Schueler made a last-lap charge and passed Schmelyun for fourth just before the checkers. The 250cc Expert main-event finishing order went in the books as Yentzer, Dickson, Brodsky, Schueler and SchmeIyun. eN Ocotillo Raceway: Jimmy LaMastus railed to the Pro-class win at round five of the AMX North/South Shootout Series in Eloy, Arizona, before a huge dust storm prematurely ended the festiviiies. I JOHNNY WHITEBOOTS ElOY, AZ, FEB. 20 ore than 280 of Arizona's finest racers rolled into Ocotill'o Raceway for round five of the AMX North/South Shootout Series. Shortly before half-time, a big dust storm showed up, spoiling a great day of racing. Justin McMurrich was declared the winner lor the combined Over 25/0ver 30 Vet Pro classes, and Paul Burger Jr. scored his first win in 250cc Novice competition, as the 70mph wind shortened the event to one moto per class. After the riders' meeting, the promoters called all the Vet Pros to the tower to discuss payout options. With only two Over 25 Pros signed up, and with three needed to make a class, the Over 30 Pros were asked if they wanted to combine the money and pay two places. Everyone voted for one big Vet Pro class, and the showdown was set. Leading out of the first turn was Troy Kalina, with Kyle Killebrew, Shawn Cisco, McMurrich and the rest of the pack in hot pursuit. Killebrew worked hard to find a way around Kalina, but Kalina kept Killebrew in second. McMurrich made his pass during lap two, moving by Cisco to place his Bridgestone/FMF /Sidi/ One/Torco YZ400F in third. Killebrew found the opening he needed on lap three, sliding by Kalina to take the lead. McMurrich was all over Kalina on the fourth lap, with Killebrew just slightly ahead in first. Cisco kept the pressure on the lead trio, ready to pounce on any mistake. Karl Adams Simone. 50 (4-6): 1. Mark Meitennan; 2. Scott Seal II; 3. Scott Heilman; 4. Zachary Villarreal; 5. Joey Peters. Up front, Johnson was doing all he could to keep Burger behind him during the white-flag lap, while O'Neal was coming on strong. Burger made the pass and secured the lead, and O'Neal moved by Johnson with a late pass to take second at the stripe. Johnson came across third, and Tom Leigh charged up to fourth after his seventh-place start. Armstrong held on to complete the top five, just ahead of Tony Walters. Rhett Urseth put on a great show in 80cc combined-age-group racing action. The 9-year-old was beaten by one rider, 14-year-old Chris Chevrette. AMA Pro Jimmy LaMastus put together an awesome win in the Pro class, putting his Premier Motorsports/Thor/FMF/Maxxis/Smith/909 sponsored KTM 125 out front early and pulling out to a sizable lead despite the windy conditions. He kept his bike low off the jumps and used his superior corner speed to blow away the competition. CN • n ..... s held fifth, back several seconds, chased by Jimmy Lewallen, Wade Morlock and Zach McKinley. Up front, McMurrich passed Kalina to move into second and then went to work on Killebrew, who bobbled, letting McMurrich scoot away with the lead and giving Kalina second. On the white-flag lap, McMurrich pulled out a comfortable lead over Kalina, winning the majority of the loot. Cisco made a late pass on Killebrew for third. Adams came across fifth, Lewallen finished sixth, Morlock was seventh, and McKinley was eighth. At noon, the "Wall of Dirt" blew by, signaling the edge of the huge storm. Everyone knew it was time to take down the E-Z Ups and batten down the hatches. The dust storm hit while the 125cc Beginners were on the course, which made for some tense moments, but they managed to get through the full moto. The race was called official based on first-moto scores. There was plenty of great racing action before the wind halted the speedfest. Troy Armstrong took the 250cc Novice holeshot, holding off Curtis Vestal, Tim Johnson, Aaron Bailey, Paul Burger and the rest of the 18-rider field. Vestal took a soil sample on lap two, and everyone moved up a position. Johnson worked on Armstrong until lap three, when Armstrong made a mistake and gave Johnson the lead. Chris O'Neal was busy making up for a 10th-place start, and he put himself in sixth after three laps. O'Neal continued shredding the class, moving into third by lap four. Armstrong bobbled and fell
