After a solid ride, Matthews came across the stripe with the moto win. Kalina was second, WITTMAN, AZ, FEB. 13 ason Matthews scored back-toback moto wins to bring home the Pro-class cash at round four of the AMX North/South Shootout Series, held at Speedworld Motocross Park, while Kent Durkee pulled it all together to win the 250cc Intermediate class, which featured great racing action in both motos. Matthews took the holeshot, leading Troy Kalina, Kyle Killebrew, Ryan Mortensen and Jonnie Deremo. Matthews put his head down and pulled a slight lead over Kalina during the first two laps. Killebrew was riding hard, trying to move into second; on the third lap, he pressed too hard with the front end in the second turn and J 48 MARCH 29. 2000' cue • Mortensen third and Deremo fourth. Moto two was a completely different story. Mortensen put his YZ426F four-stroke up front with the holeshot. Behind him, Deremo went down hard in the second turn and couldn't be moved from the racing surface, and the red flag came out. On the restart, Mortensen once again nailed the holeshot. Matthews led the chase, w.ith Kalina and Killebrew in the game_ Mortensen was riding with newfound speed, and he • n ..... s quickly put some distance between himself and the pack. Matthews made a rare mistake on lap three and gave second place to Kalina, with Killebrew right there on his fender. Matthews moved back into second after passing Kalina on lap four. On lap five, Mortensen pulled over and stopped, the victim of an empty gas tank_ This left three Pros to battle for the cash, and all three were within striking distance of the lead. Killebrew flew over Kalina off the big double across from the start line to command second. He charged hard and placed himself on the rear knobby of Matthews for the remaining three laps. Killebrew and Matthews raced hard to the wire, with Matthews coming across for the win and Killebrew taking second. His two moto wins gave Matthews the cash. Killebrew's 5-2 gave him third overall. Kalina came across third, netting second overall. Kent Durkee took the holeshot in the first 250cc Intermediate moto. Justin Myers was right there in second, with Jeremy Lastovica third, followed by John King, D.J. Curtis, and Jesse Attaway. Ever the hard charger, Myers applied pressure to Durkee. Myers let it all hang out through the whoops and took tbe lead from Durkee before the next tabletop. King made his pass of Lastovica in the back section to take over third on the second lap, while Attaway made the pass on Curtis to move into fifth. On lap three, Myers lost the front end in the tricky second turn, giving the lead back to Durkee and second to King. Myers had his hands full with Lastovica, who wanted third place badly. King put the pass on Durkee before the whoop section to take over first. Durkee struggled ·coming out of the turn before the whoop section, allowing Lastovica to pull alongside. Lastovica powered by Durkee through the section and took over second, and then set his sights on the leader, but King rode to the checkers unchallenged. Lastovica rode hard to finish second. Durkee held it together for third, Myers was fourth, Attaway was fifth and Curtis was sixth. Attaway put together one of the best starts of his young career, taking the holeshot to start moto two. Durkee was right there in second, chased by Lastovica, King, Curtis and then Myers, who had fallen and was playing catch-up. Attaway held on to the lead for 2 1/2 laps until Durkee passed him. Lastovica's charge was rewarded with second place on lap five after he passed Attaway. King also moved by Attaway a turn later when the early leader suffered some arm pump. On the white-flag lap, King suffered a bad get-off that took him out of contention, and everyone moved up a position. At the checkers, Durkee took the win, his 3-1 score giving him the overall. Next was Lastovica, his 2-2 giving him second overall. Attaway came across third for third overall. Curtis was fourth and garnered sixth overall. Myers was fifth for fifth. King's first-moto win and secondmoto DNF was still good for fourth overall. l:1li s,eeN.ld M _ ..... WitbnlIn, am- Results: Fellruary 13, 2• • l......d 41 P/W BEG A: 1. Austin Noel (KTM): 2.
