I I ~ I , he managed to hold on to second for the rest of the race. Self-employed as a timber contractor (he lives on Lumber Lane), Gilleland knows the woods. Last year, he missed winning the overal.l in the Pro class of the season-long North Carolina Hare Scrambles Series by just one point. Runner-up Greer, aboard a Yamaha, led the top-five YZ parade, including Dustin Beaty in third, Dustin's younger brother Matt in fourth, and Brad Hamrick on the Auto Body Shop Yamaha. Dustin Beaty had made the pass for the lead at the creek jump before the rain started. "I led for a lap, then got arm pump and fell in a turn, and Jason Greer got by," related Beaty. "Then Jason Gilleland passed me and I kept falling back, getting passed." When the rain began, Beaty's arm pump went away and he could ride better, but by that time there was too much mud between Dustin and the lead. He was able to work his way back up to a well-eamed third. Matt Beaty recovered from his crash with Vealey to resume the race in last place. He soon discovered that the flip had bent his bike's subframe, causing it to scrub the fender and muffler with every bounce. The Beaty brothers do well in the mud, however, and Matt made his way back to fourth. Their dad, multi-time SETRA Proclass champion Wayne Beaty, took his customary win in the Over 45 class. "On the third lap, coming down the hill toward the scoring tent, he hit something and flipped over the bars," explained Dustin. "He laid there a long time, then got back on the bike and went on." Later, after the X-rays, Wayne learned that he had broken two ribs and punctured his lung. Wayne Beaty is the reigning 1999 National Champion in the Masters A class and has the Interstate Series Over 45 title locked up. _ IIel1nod ...... Sen.1IIa 1Iel1nod, NeotII C8nl1u Results: fell...."
