Greenville MX Park: Derek Gerdes (14) chases Chase Reed (155) in the first 250cc Pro moto at the lone Star Series' return to Greenville MX Park in Texas. Texas Lone Star State Championship Series Round 2: Greenville MX Park Kurosky corrals the win "I was running in third when Brandon fell in the second moto," commented Kurosky. "Then, in the last lap, I was able to pass Hollister. Some of the jumps were hard and slick, 50 I was glad to get past Hollister for the overall win. This win will definitely help me against Fulton in the 80cc Open for the series." Hollister's turn at the point came in the 80cc (12-13) class. He flew to dual holeshots and dual victories. In moto one, Kurosky provided an early challenge but turned over the second spot to Cody Dickey on lap three when he dropped to seventh plac~. Vince Monteleone a~d Jay Shandy ran a close race for third, with Shandy getting the early lead. Monteleone passeq Shandy in lap two, holding a short lead over Shandy to the checkers. In moto two, Hollister's holeshot was the prelude to another great run. However, Kurosky applied a major dose of back-door pressure, moving the top two ahead of the pack. "We were close through the holeshot, but l was able to get out front coming out of the corner," said Hollister after the second moto. "The track was awesome all weekend, and I was very .excited about winning this race." "I fell in moto one," said Kurosky, "bu! I had better luck in moto two. I raced hard, but I couldn't get around. '" Bv DEB HERSHMAN PHOTO BV CONNIE JOHNSON GREENVILLE, lX, MAR. 5 acing round two of the Texas Lone Star State Championship Series at Greenville MX Park was like returning home after a long absence. Many racers in the Lone Star State who began their racing careers at this very park were thrilled as they returned to find an updated track. The challenging new layout was the scene of an action-packed, 23-event contest, with 399 total entries. In the 80cc Open contest, 24 eager throttle jockeys lined the gate, and Nathaniel Benoit grabbed the moto-one holeshot. A red flash Brandon Fulton - and a yellow streak - Riley Kurosky - chased the blue bullet (Benoit) around the dirt obstacle course. Benoit fought hard to stay in front of Fulton and Kurosky, and the trio finished one-two-three, respectively. In moto two, Fulton maneuvered his way through the holeshot corner with the lead as Kawasaki jockey Lance HoJlister and ~urosky knocked handlebars behind him on lap one. However, -Fulton ran into early trouble, leaving Hollister and Kurosky to battle it out for the moto win. Hollister continued to'run in front until the white-flag lap, when Kurosk,y took over the lead, winning the overall with 3-1 motos. R 46 MARCH 29. 2000' eye • e n e _ s Jay Shandy ran solid in third, keeping his edge over Dickey in moto two. Monteleone diced it up with Shandy and Dickey but fell back on the white-flag lap as the top five ran into traffic from the tail end of the 1416 gate. Chase Reed and Derek Gerdes tore up the track in the 125 and 250cc Pro classes. The two front-runners battled each other throughout the day. In 125cc Pro action, Reed led every lap, with Gerdes dodging roost and looking for a clean line around Reed. It was all business in the 250cc Pro motos, with Reed nailing the holeshot in moto one. But a determined Gerdes stole the holeshot in moto two, holding his distance in front of Reed well into lap three, when Gerdes' bike ran out of juice, leaving him stranded on the back section of the track with a DNF. Reed continued at his killer pace, claiming his fourth set of checkers for the day. Yamaha pilot Dwain Carter turned in stellar performances for third overa II in the 125s and second overall in the 250s with a 3-2 tally. Up-and-coming 80cc Beginner Austin Flook, who took round two by storm with 1- 1 motos. Justin Bunn, round one's top rider, and Flook will be tied in points going into round three. J.T. Fitcher has a stronghold on the third spot in the series, after consistent third-place finishes in the first two rounds. Pirelli Tires Interstate HS Series Mid-East HS Association Series Round 6/1: Belwood Hare Scrambles Gilleland gallops in the goop Bv BARBARA WILLIAMS PHOTOS BV LOREN WILLIAMS BElWOOD, NC, FEB. 26 "Ilove the mud - long as it ain't cold," grinned Jason Gilleland of Vale, North Carolina. The rain poured down as Gilleland accepted his first-place plaque and Pro purse money for winning the Pro class and the overall at Belwood, North Carolina's first hare scramble of the year. Round six of the Pirelli Tires Interstate Hare Scrambles Series - sponsored by Tri-City Honda Dealers including Jim's Motorcycle Sales of Johnson City, Tennessee; Jim's Honda of Kingsport, Tennessee; and Atlas Honda/Yamaha in Bristol, Virginia - doubled as round one of the 2000 Mid-East Hare Scrambles Association Series. Before the rain began, 320 riders signed up - a record entry for the Interstate Series. The Mini riders completed their race without rain, but the only dry lap the big bikes had was their first. Gilleland did not get off to a good start before the rain began. "Jeff Vealey slid out in the first turn and Matt Beaty flipped over him," explained Gilleland, "50 I got held up by that and was just about last going into the woods." By the end of the first lap, Gilleland had ridden his Fun Cyclesbacked KTM 125 (which was "box stock, by the way," according to Gilleland) past a few riders; the next lap showed further progress. Gilleland took over second spot just as the first few spatters of rain hit his goggles. "On the third lap, I passed Jason Greer for the lead," said Gilleland. Greer had pulled the holeshot, and
