AHRMA,lProgressive Suspension Historic Cup Series Round 2: Daytona International Speedway By Henny Ray Abrams DAYTONA BEACH, FL, MAR 6-7 eff Nash was the modern man at Wthe vintage races. The Mansfield, Texas, rider won the Super Mono race on Monday, then came back on Tuesday to win the Battle of the Twins Formula One and Sound of Thunder. None of the victories came easily, Bill St. John providing the angst in the final two races. Monday's Super Mono race began with Ducati 572-mounted Nash getting the launch and the lead, but only briefly. Sweden's Per-Olov Ogeborn, on a Rotax, came by on the first run down the back straight, the move setting off a passing battle that went on for the next few laps. Nash dipped under Ogeborn in the West End Horseshoe on lap three and held him at bay up to the final lap. They ran down the front straight and the tri-oval side by side, splitting traffic in turn one, Nash holding a slight edge. The order held right up for the remainder of the lap, the pajr coming down the front stretch side by side, Nash just getting the nod. Third went to Sweden's Tesfai Konig an another Ducati 572. In Tuesday's Battle of the Twins (BoT) Formula One race, Nash got away badly. On the first lap, he was back in sixth place before he quickly moved up and began his pursuit of Bill St. John on the second lap. Both were on Ducatis: Nash on a '99 768 and St. John on a 2000 800, and the bikes were evenly matched. On the third lap, it was Nash out front and he'd stay there for the duration, though St. John was never fa r behind, until the final lap. It looked like St. John was lurking, waiting to use a draft pass out of the chicane on the final lap to make his move. Only problem was that he overshot the corner. "I blew the chicane on the final lap," St. John said. That allowed Nash a free run to the line, and his second win. "I had to really focus on the last few laps since I was getting so much pressure from St. John," Nash said. Third went to Ducati 800-mounted Paul Vitale, with David Podolsky, on an Aprilia, fourth and Johnathan Glaefke, on a Suzuki, fifth. Nash and St. John were at it again in the Sound of Thunder a few races later. Nash again gated badly and St. John was again away, but he didn't waste any time making his way to the front. The Ducati 768-mounted rider tion about the outcome. When the flag dropped eight laps later, he had about a 50-second advantage for the win. Kevin Brown took second on a 1989 Yamaha TZ-240, then another six seconds back finished Robert Price and his 1979 Yamaha RZ-350. "I think this is my fourth win here in four years," Hoffman said. eN fifl 46 MARCH 22, 2000' cue I Oaytllna Intematianal Speedway Daytllna Beach, Florida Results: March 1-7, 2aaa (Reund 2 at 1aJ used a sl ingshot pass to move past St. John and to the front on the third lap, and he sped away. By the fifth of eight laps, he had over 3.5 seconds on the Ducati 800 of Nash, and he kept pouring it on. "It was a bit dodgy early in the race," Nash said after beating St. John. "I didn't have a chance to scrub in the tires, so I had to be rather conservative. The tires came in well, and it turned out to be the third win of the week for me." St. John would finish second, and Johnathan Glaefke took third on a Suzuki TL- 1000. Fourth went to David Podolsky, on an Aprilia, and Rolf Knecht, Ducati 983, was fifth. Pat Mooney was one of the crossover riders during the vintage days. In addition to winning the Classics 60s race on a Matchless G·50, and taking a distant second to Team Obsolete's Gianfranco Bonera, Mooney won in what's considered a modern class. The Sorrenta, Florida, rider saddled up his H-D 1200 and acted like he'd disappear from the Battle of the Twins Formula Two class. After pulling out nearly a three-second lead on the fifth of eight laps, Mooney suddenly saw his lead shrink. Japan's Sadanori Hikita on the Sundance Project Harley was closing rapidly, blowing by Mooney on the backstretch on the seventh lap and sprinting away. Then disaster struck. Hikita pulled off in the chicane with a mechanical problem, handing the win to Mooney. Inheriting second was e n e vw s Jeff Nash (34) and Bill St. John (81) dice in the BatUe of the Twins Fonnula 1 class. Nash won on his '99 Ducati 768, and also took the Sound of Thunder class. David Fulkerson on a 1996 MotoGuzzi 850, about 55 seconds back. "I could see him coming," Mooney said "I was already thinking about what I might have to do on the last lap. I think 1 could've got him on the final lap with a draft pass. I would've liked to have beaten them fa ir and square. It's too bad he dropped out." Third went to Charles Burnett on a 1988 Honda 650 twin, with Tommy Wagner taking fourth on a 1999 Suzuki 650 V-twin. Burnett used the same Honda to win the BoT Formula Three, a relatively easy run to the flag in the eight-lap race, which was run with the BoT F-l. Burnett moved to the lead on the fourth lap, John Staska hanging with him for a few laps before Burnett took off. After that he had an unimpeded run to the flag. Thomas Dorsey moved out of a trailing trio to take second, with Staska slipping to 13th. The most international of the "modern" fields was the BoT TwoStroke, the field starting in a first wave in front of the slim, four-rider, Sound of Singles field. There were a host of Frenchman entered, but the fast rider was a German, Walter Hoffman, the 1999 winner on the 1990 Yamaha TZ-250. Hoffman was flying from the start, no doubt of his intent, and no ques- Monday PRE· '40: 1. Rusty Lowry (Ind): 2. Norbert Nickel (BMW): 3. WHH Benlseh (BMW): 4. Erich Biey (BMW): 5.
