"All of the Ox/eys' hard work will die simply because they were successful" Whither Charlotte? I know motorcycling's biggest fans. When he's not watching the riders on ESPN or in videos, Kevin's looking at Cycle News. Kevin was born with Down's Syndrome, but that doesn't slow him down. He tries to do everything a normal eight-year-old would do. Doc told him that being a special child, he has to ride with me, but some day he will be on his own. For years Kevin and I have gone to the Supercross here in North Carolina, but for some reason PACE missed Charlotte this year. I had to travel to Atlanta to see the superstars of motocross, and because of the long ride, Kevin was not able to go. But after the things I saw in Atlanta, I was glad he was not with me. On the walk from to hotel to the Georgia Dome, we saw many panhandlers, and we felt very out of place. The show itself was great, and as usual, Jeremy made it look so easy. When will he be beat? Kevin and I plan on going to Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, to see the GNCC race. So if you see Kevin and me on our Suzuki DR350, stop us and say hello. Mikel Corm on saying the motocross bikes to be delivered in March have been pushed back to September? If so, this should be front-page news! Let me know, as some of my friends are planning on taking delivery in a few weeks. Thanks. Jim Dueck jnbc:JueckOrnobynet.com According to Cannondale's Tom Armstrong, the MX model will be available by mid-April. The XC and Enduro models are expected in six months, and the quad should be out within the calendar year.. .Editor Whither Gi/era? I want to thank Alan Cathcart and Peter Starr for the article in the March 1 edition ("Bob Mac's Magic Motorcycle," Issue #8). Fifty-odd years ago, my brother, who was a member of way in So Cal, all of the Oxleys' hard work will die simply because they were successful, and some idiots on the Orange County Fair board want a bigger piece of the action. No one thought this could happen there, but it looks like it will. How about starting a letter-writing/e-mailing/phone-calling campaign? Why not put a plan into action on this problem, instead of sitting around, doing nothing, and letting it happen? You guys on the west coast want something to sink your teeth into? Take a bite of this one! And don't let go until you see some resultsl I urge anyone who has ever attended a Speedway event anywhere and liked it to take up arms in this cause. The closing will only happen if the speedway community lets it! If people worried less about the way and what you will be missing when it is closed. Please be positive. The Spring Classic is schedu led for April 8. The 32nd Season Opener is scheduled for April 29. Thanks for your support of Costa Mesa Speedway! Lour; DIC/ey International Speedway, Inc. San Clemente. CA Write to Fair Manager Becky Bailey Findley at Orange County Fair, 88 Fair Dr., Costa Mesa, CA 92626. Please be positive.. .Editor Concord. NC Whither Trails? Whither Vulnerability? I know MX is mostly a sport for manly men and women too, but I really enjoyed Eric Johnson's From The Fences, "The King Of Something" (March 8, Issue ·#9). I appreciate it when we get a little outside the hustle-bustle ego of winners and losers and more into the very human and vulnerable feelings of why we got (and still get) so excited and passionate about motorcycles and MX. I put more of my energy and focus into music now, but in the late '60s and '70s, MX was my whole life. These days I read and watch and take in a couple of vintage and local races, and I had been getting a little bored with Cycle News, but with more of the human and personal viewpoints I will reconsider renewing my subscription. Robert Haag 7'+ MX National #9. Hus'lvarno Boston. MA Whither Cannondale? On page 20 of your March 8, 2000, issue, you casually mention that "delivery of Cannondale's high-tech four-stroke has been pushed back until September." Which model are you referring to? Cannondale now offers three motorcycle models and has announced an A TV. Their web site, as of the writing of this, still states anticipated delivery of the first motocross bikes this month. Are you Cannondale's Enduro model: Out In six months? the Guild of Motoring Writers, took me to Oulton Park to see Geoff Duke and "Bob Mac" ride the 'Fire Engines' (in those days the fairings were painted in Italy's classic racing color of red). They were so smooth, pealing into Old Hall Corner like two Spitfires in echelon. And the sound still brings back the goose bumps. They were the first fours I had heard (in those days, most people raced the Norton, Matchless and the Gold Star singles). Thanks for the memories. Doug Co wi" "Received via internet Whither Speedway? I Last year at this time, people were touting all the great accomplishments of the Oxleys and how they must be doing something right if they could run 30 years continuously at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Now we find out that the 2000 season will be the last for them. The situation with Costa Mesa is really sad, but it just goes to show what a precarious position speedway is in here in the good 01' U.S. of A. Just think, after 30 years of speed- politics involved in speedway and just thought more about what needs to be done and what we have to do to make it happen, North American speedway would be much happier and more prosperous. T,m Mathewson Via the internet Whither Speedway? /I It's true! After 32 years at the famous Costa Mesa Speedway "bullring arena: International Speedway has announced that 2000 appears to be the last season ever on the Orange County Fairground. Under the terms of our current agreement with the Fairgrounds. we cannot afford to run events at the Costa Mesa Speedway beyond this season. There is still hope that our current status with the Fairgrounds may change, but it is really slim. Everyone at International Speedway, Inc. is in tears over the whole situation. Just the same, International Speedway plans to pull out all the stops, and we need your help by writing to the Fair Manager. Let her know your feelings about Costa Mesa Speed- cue. e As winter snows continue to pummel the mountainous areas of the west, I am reminded of the continued effort by the Clinton/Gore administration to bury the American public under an avalanche of Forest Service planning processes. The Forest Service recently unveiled to the pu bl ic its newIy proposed road policy, complete with agency spincontrol documents, the actual rule as published in the Federal Register, and a 76-page environmental assessment. While this alone is enough to overwhelm most folks who simply want to enjoy the great outdoors, the public is also being asked to simultaneously study and comment on thousands of pages of other Forest Service proposals that include the President's road less directive, the land· management planning regulations. the Forest Service strategic plan, and the unified watershed approach to management. Some may argue that certain elements contained in anyone of these planning efforts may be benign. This may, in fact, be true, as some of the public's concerns expressed in previous agency proposals have been, to some extent, incorporated into the new road policy. However, the collective impact of these various Forest Service programs is one that many land-use advocates are still trying to ascertain. Don Amador Wester" "Regional "Representative.
