Taking the top spot puts Hopkins at the top of the title table with 37 points. Moore has 32 and Arclight Suzuki's Lee Acree, who survived a chicane incident on the ninth lap to finish third, is third with 29. Moore had qualified third behind Mazda Chaparral Suzuki's Damon Buckmaster and Hopkins and just in front of Acree and Hooters Suzuki's Jamie Bowman. Take Buckmaster out of the line-up, and you have the order of finish of the top four - and Buckmaster was taken out of the line-up. The Australian was at or near the front of the eight-rider mix-up for much of the first half of the race. He led here and there and would certainly have been a factor since he'd qualified on the pole with a time more than four-tenths faster than Hopkins. But it wasn't to be. On the 10th of 15 laps Buckmaster slowed dramatically and was out of the race. The problem was an internal engine malfunction that the team worked to diagnose late into the night without a definitive answer. The lap before he pulled out there'd been some fireworks. Acree had run wide entering the chicane, then cut back hard to force his way into the front-running pack, running into Hooters Suzuki's Mike Ciccotto. The impact took out Ciccotto's front wheel and caused a vicious low-side into the haybales. "Unfortunately, going into the chicane I caught an extra downshift accidentally," Acree said. "Went in a little too hot, back end chattering. Once I got it under control I turned in and was going back to the right into the chicane and Ciccotto and I got together and unfortunately he fell down. I apologized to Mike. but it's all trying to get to the front." So by lap 10 the lead pack had diminished to two - Moore and Hopkins - with Moore taking the lead in the chicane' on 10, the duo speeding away. It appeared Moore might be able to make the break stick until he ran wide in the West End Horseshoe three laps from the end after panicking while overtaking a rider in the fast left-hand dogleg. Moore said that in a panic he overshot his brake marker and went into the corner too deep. "I probably should have run off the track and I didn't," he said. "I did everythjng to stay on the pavement. I squared the bike off and got on it and I saw out of the corner of my eye, John [Hopkins], so I knew I lost a lot of my margin to him. I even said to myself at that point, 'That's probably it, if I don't fall back now, I'm probably not going to win.' I had that in my head because I lost that gap that I had and it sort of worked out that way." And he was right. It came down to the end and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. "I looked back twice and I saw him [Hopkins] right there and I was trying to make the decision should I fall back, let him go, try to catch him," Moore said. :'There was such a big swarm of bikes back there I thought I could go from first, fall back, and maybe never catch the draft and wind up third or fourth or off the box, so I just gritted my teeth and went for it." The lead pair had broken free in the final stages. There was a quartet in vain pursuit, with Arclight Suzuki's Acree moving up to third with four laps to go, the four-rider pack taking their dispute to the line. Mazda Chaparral Suzuki's Roger Lee Hayden moved into third on lap 12, but Acree was soon back around him. The battle for the final podium spot went in Acree's favor over Bowman, with Valvoline EMGO Suzuki's Grant Lopez staying in front of Hayden. Englishman Allan Jefferies was seventh on the second Arclight Suzuki and Elite Racing's Jack Pfeifer ended up eighth. eN FULL EVENT VIP PASS ONLY $35 KIDS 12 A."ID UNDER ONLY $5 formulausa.com ECSX 1/3 WINS" Daytonl IntemltioDlI Speedway Daytona Beach, Florida Resulls: March 10, 2000 750cc SOPER SPORT FINAL: I.
