AHRMA/Speed & Sport National Vintage MX Series: Round 2 Hardrock Cycle Park Day of the Legends Expert motos over Smith's '62 BSA Gold Star, with the bulk of the action occurring behind the pair. In moto one, Claude McElvain (BSA) finished third ahead of Phil Hanford and Barry Sage, both on Gold Stars. The second time out, those three mixed it up, with Sage this time taking third spot over Hanford, and McElvain running into difficulties that had him finishing an eventual 11 tho Sage's 5-3 finishes earned him third for the day behind Atkins and Smith, while Hanford was fourth overall. The biggest winner was Ohio's Elmar Kruza, who had a near-perfect day - five moto wins and one second - on his '74 Ossa 250 Phantom in the Intermediate division of Sportsman 250cc, Over 30 and Over 40. He was also involved in some of the closest racing, including the 250 race, where he went at it with Jeffrey Clark (Honda), Ronnie Welch (CZ), Ed Sherry (Husqvarna), Gayland Bennett (Honda) and a host of others. Clark was second overall to Kruza in both the 250cc and Over 40 events. Double winners for the day were Honda-mounted Wayne Rantz in Premier Lightweight and Classic 125cc Novice, and BSA-powered Ron Winget in Premier 500cc and Classic 500cc Intermediate. eN Bv MATT BENSON OCALA, FL, MARCH 4 t's not often mere mortals get to take to the track with former world champions, but for AHRMA motocrossers there were two of the sport's legends out mixing it up with the regular vintage contingent at Ocala. Brad Lackey, 500cc World Champion in '82, rode a 1974 CZ 400 to a pair of moto wins in Over 40 Expert, while 1964-65 500cc World Champion Jeff Smith took home a win in Over 60 Expert and a second in Premier 500cc Expert, both on BSAs. Lackey led Yamaha rider David Ellis the entire distance in the first Over 40 moto, as another American motocross pioneer, Barry Higgins, worked to overcome an uncharacteristically slow start on his 1974 KTM 250 before eventually finishing third. Moto two saw Higgins continue to struggle as his carburetor manifold came loose early in the race, while out front an excellent battle raged between Tim Shephard, Ellis and Lackey. On the third of five laps, Lackey emerged from the south section of the track ahead of Ellis, with no sign of Shephard. By race end Lackey had built another solid lead to take the day's overall win. Higgins, whose H&H KTM sponsors AHRMA's National Hare Scrambles Series, wasn't to be denied a victory, taking a pair of wins over CCM rider Phil Hanford in Over 50 Expert. Mike Atkins and his MatchlessBSA special led both Premier 500cc I 56 MARCH 22,2000' cue • Hanlrock Cycle Park Ocala, Florida Results: March 4, 2000 PREM L/W EX: 1. Allen Wenzel (Gre); 2. Former National Trials Champion Curt Comer crashed his Honda 150 on the first lap of the first race. breaking his left collarbone. "I lost control of my motor vehicle and paid the price." the affable Comer quipped later. AHRMA's Bike Week motocross attracted about 425 entries to compete on a circuit that bypassed many of the Hardrock obstacles unsuitable for motorcycles with seven and four inches of front and rear suspension travel, respectively. Darkening skies and gusting winds were greeted with trepidation by AHRMA racers who had seen rain turn the former rock quarry into a quagmire in other years. When the deluge did come. it forced officials to throw the red flag about twothirds of the way through the first set of motos. as everyone ran for cover. The rain was over shortly. and track personnel cut out one downhill-uphill section. After just a few"more motos, the course was tacky and fast again. and despite brilliantly sunny skies and continued wind, there was never any dust for the more than 400 vintage entries. AHRMAIClassic Bike Magazine Dirt Track Series: Round 1 Jackson Motorsports FlatTrack Fogies Bv MATT BENSON OCALA, FL, MARCH 5 ooker Poirier and his handshift Harley-Davidson WR were the combination to beat at AHRMA's dirt track season opener. The Biddeford, Maine, rider swept both the Dinosaur and Classic 500/750cc classes aboard the old 750cc twin. Then Poirier switched to a Can-Am and finished second to Kenny Parker in Sportsman 250cc. The racing started with the three brakeless classes, and in Dinosaur it was Poirier chased by class champion Beno Rodi on a Royal Enfield, and George Wills on another handshift Harley. As Poirier stretched his lead, Rodi and Wills battled for second position. Passing was difficult on the small track, and Wills was not able to find a way past the Enfield rider. B
