John Mlelland Jr. DAVE HOENIG PHOTOS BV FLAT TRAK FOTOS he opening round of the 2000 Southeast Regional Amateur Championships got off to a soggy start, as a fast-moving rainstorm hit the Volusia Speedway Park halfway through the program. The rains forced officials to postpone the main events to Thursday, when the series was scheduled to return to the fast half-mile. Beautiful weather and smooth racetracks graced the rest of the fourrace series. The series was to be made up of two half-miles at Volusia, and two short tracks at Daytona's Municipal Stadium. With almost 850 entries there was a lot of action. Honeybrook, Pennsylvania's Jared Mees was the dominant rider of the 54 MARCH 22, 2000' G Y G I e week, taking home nine first-place trophies. Mees had three wins in the 250cc class and two wins in the 125cc mains to go with his four 1OOcc wins. Another Pennsylvanian, John Lewis, came away with five wins, including a victory in the 85cc DTX class, and he swept all four of the 85cc (7-11) classes. Michigan rider Carter Myers scored four wins with his 85cc Honda: two in the 85cc (1215) class and two in the 85cc DTX class. Fellow statesman Jack Warren and New York's Matt Weidman swept their respective classes - Warren in the Over 50 Senior class and Weidman in the 65cc (7 -11) division. Several riders who have been big nevvs winners in past years struggled. Nick Cummjngs, Logan Myers, Rob Pearson and Josh Toungett were held to one win apiece. CN Vol usia Speedway Park Barberville.
