March 5. aaoo AMA National Hot Shoe Series - Round 2: Volusia Speedway Park Florida Flat Track Series - Round 3: • aVIS akes ~~v-=-er By DAVE HOENIG PHOTO BY FLAT TRAK FOTOS ound two of the AMA National Hot Shoe Series and round three of the Florida Flat Track Series came together at the Volusia Speedway Park half-mile, and Will Davis came away as the big winner in the 750cc Expert class. The Moroney's/FASTHOG.com/ Gould Erectors-backed Davis and Sacramento Harley-Davidson/ Phoenix/Big Valley Ford's Chris Carr continued their weekend battle at Vol usia, and with Davis taking the win, the two riders are now tied with 61 points at the midpoint of the Florida Flat Track Series. The 250cc Pro-Sport heats were won by the Laursen Racing/Stauffer Motors-backed Brandon Laursen and Bryan Smith. The main was a tight race between Smith and Brian Vincent, with Laursen just off the pace. Vincent held the lead early then gave it up to Smith on lap three. He then took it back on lap eight. Smith was not to be denied, though, and he shot back into the lead on lap 10 of the 12-lap race. Smith held on to take the win, followed by Vincent and Laursen. Kyle Long won the first HarleyDavidson Sportster Performance heat on his Indianapolis Southside HD/High Hopes Racing-backed Sportster. Mobile Bay H-D's Tim Lorge captured the second heat. Gary Rogers, Tony Souza and Kyle Long led the field into turn one. Rogers and Souza pulled out a small lead, as Kevin Hilbert moved into third. Michelle Disalvo was on the move and took second on lap five. At the halfway point, Rogers had a big lead over Disalvo, Souza and Lorge. The top four separated from each other, leaving Hilbe!"1:, Tom McGrane and Kyle Long to battle. The four 600cc Expert heats were hotly contested. Donnie Steward led the first heat right away, with Paul Lynch and Kenny Cool beth right behind him. Lynch and Cool beth quickly moved into the lead. Coolbeth had his Corbin Racing/H-D of McCoy moved from deep in the pack to take third. Chris Carr led Rich King and Aaron Creamer in the second heat. Joe Kopp worked his way through the pack, while the Harley-Davidson of Sacramento/Phoenix/Big Valley Ford-backed Carr pulled away. Kopp locked onto King and took second at the crossed flags. King cruised home third. Steve Beattie ran away with the third heat, leaving Jason Fletcher and Cory Roth to battle over second. The Gardner Racing-backed Beattie easily moved on to the main, as Cory Roth dropped Fletcher to third. Greg Tysor led Mike Hacker and Trenton Bailey in the last heat. Tysor and Hacker pulled away, with Don Mullen and Scott Sehl fighting over the last transfer spot. Tysor led all the way into turn three of the last lap when his bike quit. The Saddle men/ Lancaster H-D/Dodge Brothersbacked Hacker inherited the win, while both Mullen and Sehl made the main event. Hacker led Beattie and Cool beth into the first turn, but it was Beattie in the lead at the end of lap one. Carr carved his way through the field and took the lead on lap three. Beattie, Hacker, Kopp and Coolbeth were fighting for the scraps, trying to secure second. Halfway through the race, it was Hacker, Beattie, Coolbeth, Kopp, Lynch and King who were all shooting for the runner-up spot. As Carr pulled farther and farther away, Coolbeth finally took sole control of second. Carr finished the race with a full-straightaway lead. Beattie, Kopp, King, McCoy and Sehl rounded out the top eight. The 600 Pro-Sport was another large class requiring heats. Jerad Cheney (Cheney Engineering/Gina's BMW) moved around early leader Nick Evans to take the first heat. Brian Hodges edged Gary Boyle for the last transfer. The second heat went easily to Bryan Smith (ATK Motorcycles/Paul Lasko). Gordon Schopieray was a (Above) Grand National Champion Chris Carr (1) may have led the 750cc Expert race for a while, but it was Will Davis (21) who came out on top at the end. (Left) Carr still managed to take the checkered flag in the 600cc Expert Missouri Harley in the lead on lap three, and the top two were set. The third heat belonged to Brian Vincent (West Michigan DT Assn./Dennis Vincent), as he finished well ahead of Jacob Latimer and Greg Boyle, who edged Hisateru Taniguchi. Jason Goodwin led the last heat until Bob Weiss (Moroney's H-D/l-800-FASTHOG) blasted by. Jason Spearin worked his way into second, but Goodwin held onto third over Tom Cox. In the main, Cheney got the holeshot, but Smith quickly grabbed the lead, only to blow the groove on lap six. Cheney was back in front to stay, as Smith was only able to close slightly. Joe Zydinsky was a solid third, while Spearin moved up to fourth over Weiss and Schopieray. The 750cc Experts finished up the long day. After setting fast time in the qualifying heats, Davis easily won the first heat. Bryan Bigelow and Gary Rogers were a solid second and third, while George Richtmeyer topped Jim Mcllvena and Joey Brock for the last transfer. Geo Roeder (Schaeffer's HD/Las Vegas H-D/KK/Roeder's H-D/ Fatzinger) and Steve Beattie shot to the front of heat two leaving Jason Tyer, Chris Evans and Mike Hacker behind. Roeder and Beattie crujsed all the way, but Hacker stormed up to third. Evans took the last transfer from Mike Varnes and Tyer. The third heat was a tight battle between Rich King (Harley-Davidson Motor Co./Shoei/Vanson) and Chris Carr. King thwarted all of Carr's challenges to take a narrow victory. Paul lynch was a solid third, while J.R. Schnabel edged Tim Eades for the last transfer. Making his first start after his neartragic spill in Sacramento was Dan Stanley. Stanley finished eighth but looked solid in his first 750cc ride back. In the final, Davis got the holeshot over King, Bigelow, Roeder, Lynch and Carr. Davis started to cruise, but Bigetow dosed late in the race. King was within striking distance of the lead duo, but couldn't really challenge. The best Carr could do was fourth but well ahead of Roeder. Schnabel worked his way around Lynch for fifth. Rogers edged Beattie and Evans for eighth. eN Volusia Speedway Park Barllerville, Florida Results: March 5, 2000 [Round 2 of 8 of the AMA National Hot Shoe Series!
