Daytona Beech. FL . MSl"'Ch 1 1 • 20CXJ AMA,/EA Sports Supercross Series Round 9; Daytona International Speedway I went down, I only had to pass Brock [Sellards], who was riding a reaJly good race. This is actually the first time I've ever led a professional Supercross. So to go down and still be in second, I was like, 'Yes, this is great!' Although Sellards couldn't keep Pastrana behind him, his Fonseca, the defending series champion, held tough for fourth, ahead of the hard-riding Roncada. Paul Currie, Branden Jesseman, Ryan Clark, Tyler Evans and Michael Brandes filled the top 10. eN 08,- IlIlIlmatianal Speedway 0 . , - 1Ieacll, florida Basults: Man:lIll, 2000 (round 4 at 11 HEAT 1: I. Louis, Missouri, March 18 Round 11- Minneapolis, Minnesota, March 25 MARCH 22, 2000' eye I liOD@ BSIEFLY••• _ Ricky Carmichael is the most prolific 125cc motocrosser of all time. with 12 125cc Supercross wins and 25 125cc motocross wins (not to mention one 125cc Supercross and three 125cc motocross titles). Expectations have been high since he joined the 250cc ranks last year, and he's felt it. Today, however, brought some measure of respect. "Everyone's always asking me to win, to win," said Carmichael, seated next to McGrath at the post-race press conference. "They're asking me to beat the best Supercross rider ever in the sport. It's difficult; it's not that easy. The guy's unbelievable. He has records that no one will ever touch, and they're asking me to beat the best guy ever." It may seem like Carmichael's premier win in that division was a long time in coming, but the truth is, Carmichael is just 20 years old. To put that in perspective, Jeremy McGrath was 21 when he got his initial 250cc win, so logic would tell you that Carmichael has a lot of potential yet. That said, McGrath not only won races in his rookie 250cc year, but he won the title. It has taken Carmichael about a season and a half to get his first win. The Floridian's Chevy Trucks/Kawasaki team was also happy with the victory, considering it was the team's first 250cc main event win since January of 1998. Now that he's finally beaten McGrath, this will certainly help Carmichael's confidence. "I'm just going to go out there and carry the momentum and do the best I can," Carmichael said. "If I win next week I'll take that momentum to the next race. I'm going to take it as it comes. I'm not going to force any issues." 18. 20. 22. 24. Greg Schnell (Yam): 25. Jeremy McGrath said his problem was purely physical; "What happened was that my legs got a little bit tired out there. actually a lot tired. My legs were a little weak. Vuillemin said that he wasn't prepared for the weather conditions; "I thought it was hot. but not like that. - he said. "The track was pretty rough. and some obstacles were not too smooth." Coupled with Vulllemin's third. McGrath's third allowed him to stretch his title lead to 27 points. 212·185. With nine of 16 races completed. Carmichael is fourth with 158 points. 10 points behind Amsoil/Competition Accessories/Jack in the Box/Factory Connection Honda's Mike laRocco.
