WANT TO cuit, held near Post, Texas - a town founded by cereal giant c.w. TS LOCALE ENDUR EUROFIL SUBSCRIBE? Post. Unusually warm winter weather made the 250 entrants comfortable at the start. The event is held on the Macy Ranch with help from longtime Lubbock, Texas Yamaha dealer Nub Stovall. The ranch envelops land in the Llano Estacado and land below the A Caprock. The scenic overlooks were once used by Indians to run buffalo over the cliffs for easy hunting; it is hard not to think of this piece of history while riding through some of these areas. Off the start. riders dropped into some tight sand washes laden with mesquite and salt cedar trees. After posting some impressive test scores early in the race. Lair "coasted" - in his words - the rest of the way. still besting his next competitor by at least 90 seconds in each of the short course's three special tests. The long-course riders relaxed through the short-course test sections, knowing that the determining specials were yet to come. As predicted, after the second gas, the race began. KTM/CycieTown/MSR/Michelin/ Ara i/Sup erFast Fuels/Pro-Armor/Pro- Taper-sponsored and two-time defending TSCEC cham- c C R s pion Haydn Franklin held a slim three~sec· and lead over the current RMEC champion, Honda-mounted Bryan Penney, at the second gas. A tight, nasty, gnarly, up-down, leftright. rocky section awaited these two state champions. Franklin sneaked into the first check-out at 59 seconds. and Penney. after some bouts with the ground, came in more than a full minute behind. Then fellow AA o rider Dave Neumeister carded a 4D at the tie breaker. Hampered by a few "mental errors" earlier, Neumeister now held the lead by seven seconds. The last seven miles - an open 3D-mph riverbed section - wouLd be the determining factor as to who would be the overall champion. Neumeister made the most of his situation and blitzed to the finish with the fastest time in the last section, 14 seconds ahead of Texas AA regular Michael Wilson. Franklin au A had trouble keeping air in both of his tires during the final test. but he stayed on pace and maintained second overall, behind Neumeister. Penney held on to third overall, just two second ahead of RMEC president .~ Scott Bright. Results o 0/11. A: l)cve Neumeister (KTM) 0/11. B: Trulyn Deeds (Yam). 0/11. C: Bnt Hammll (Yam). M: I.
