Both times out, Durelle won and Anderson was a close second. stages of the race. the Husqvarna/KTM of Gresham/Steahly Off· Road/Spectro/MSR/ Cooper Oil-backed Bozarth took the lead at the 25-mile mark and never let up. The Northwest Desert Riders laid out the 100-mile course on the property of a very generous ranch owner. Trail boss Steve Lamm told everyone to get plenty of sleep the night before. and he did an excellent job of marking the course for the 325 entranls. Temperatures that hovered around freez.ing all day and a light mix of snow and rain made for perfect riding conditions and good visibility. The classes started in waves every 15 seconds with the engines running: some classes had 50 riders battling for the first tum over open sage land. Travis Bamford got the AA holeshot on his Herb's Cycle Town/House of Horsepower/ MSR/White Brothersrrorco/Works Connection YZ426, and he went on to finish second overall. Overall Amateur winner Aaron Veitch got the holeshot in the Open class on his KTM 250. Judy Winters once again topped the large turnout in the Women's class. After running wide open for as far as you could see, the course began climbing Pine Mountain, and it became very technical and rocky. Following the instructions given at the riders' meeting, many riders rode cautiously on the first lap to avoid crashing. Bone-jarring rocks and hidden ice patches made for some interesting passes and many a blistered hand. Once off the mountain, things didn't get any easier. High speeds in the choppy sagebrush pounded the riders' stamina and endurance levels to mush, and deep sand washes fatigued bike and rider alike. Just as in many of the cross country, enduro and grand prix races on the Oregon Motorcycle Riders Association calendar. attrition took its toll. By the end, some riders had been hammered for more than four hours and were elated just to have finished. The true "Ironman" spirit was lIlive and well. however, as the race was met with overwhelming approval by the riders. Colorado MC Ice Race Series Durelle doubles down By MARl Lu RAINBOW FAll.S. CO. FEB. 13 The Harry's Roamers Motorcycle Ice Race Series Championship was wrapped up on February 13. 2000. The HRMC. Colorado's oldest motorcycle club, has been hosting the series, located at Rainbow Falls, for 35 years. This year's series consisted of five races on con· secutive Sundays (with the exception of Super Bowl weekend). Spectators and racers were treated to some amazingly close lap times. The lap times of the two fastest classes - the 300cc Studded Pro and Open Studded Pro classes (the mostly motocross-style bikes) - were averaging just one second faster than those of the Speedway Pro Studded classes. One of the most notable classes this year was the 0- 100cc Studded Kids class. for rider less than 14 years old. Their average lap times were just three seconds slower than those of the 300cc and Open Studded Pro classes. The two most exciting moments of the season occurred on the last day. After getting a slow start and battling his way back to first place in the Speedway Pro Studded class. Bob Richards took the checkered flag. This win ensured him of the class title - one for which he has been working for a long time, after breaking his ankle several years ago at this event. Then. in the Open Pro Studded class, longtime friends and competitors Brian Anderson and Davey Durelle did battle. Anderson took the holeshot. with Durelle right on his tail. DureJle kept trying to get a wheel under Anderson and hit a bump coming out of tum four, causing him to bang his front wheel into Anderson's footpeg. Later. Durelle was forced to drop back about a quarter of a lap wh~n he was almost thrown off the bike in a rough section. Durelle came back with a vengeance, and the two swapped positions three times on the last lap. Durelle prevailed. winning by only a bike length. Results M: I. Rick Bozarth: 2. FEB. 13 Suzuki-mounted Robert Clark continued his stranglehold on the California Racing Club's 125cc Beginner class as he crushed the competition with a runaway win during the annual running of the Diamond Head Grand Prix. held at Los Angeles County Raceway. When the green flag was waved for the dead-engine start. it was Jason Ortiz leading the field through the sweeping right-hand first turn. Ryan Peterson had his YZ 125 running in second place. ahead of Clark. Michael Brewer and Brian Encisco. After only a lap on the extended layout that encompassed both the Saddle Glen and J.B. Memorial tracks, Clark had made his way to the front and had 10 seconds on Peterson. Jon Bender sliced' his way up from an eighthplace start to control third, ahead of Encisco. Clark could do no wrong. and he was distancing himself from the field with each passing lap. At the 25-minute mark of the 45minute race, Clark had nearly half a minute on Bender, who had gotten around Peterson for the runner-up position. Peterson crashed a short time later and decided to call it a day. Ortiz inherited third place. just ahead of Encisco. who was being hounded by Chris Peramore. When the checkers finally fell. Clark had such an overwhelming lead that it looked like he was in another class. Bender crossed the finish all by himself in second place. with Paramore charging up until the end to take third. Ortiz and Encisco claimed fourth and fifth. respectively. David Delucia was equally impressive in the 125cc Novice class. in which he led from start to finish to earn the win on his Siammin Motorsports/Flum Racing-backed Yamaha. Riley Seckinger shadowed DeLucia all the way to the finish for second. over Ryan McConnell and Darin Chisholm. Ricky Parks left no doubt that he was the fastest mini rider on the day. Parks started out with a solid win in the 80cc (12- 13) class, over Scott Martin and Sterling Zepeda. Parks then returned to walk away from the competition in the Supermini class on his AI Holley/Nationwide Cycle-backed YZ80. Tody Chevalier topped Mitchell Alsobrook and Tim McDaniel for second place. Matt Morgan pulled off a great holeshot in the first 250cc Pro moto. but Laughridge reeled in Morgan at the double jump by the end of the first lap and took off. Laughridge was never challenged in the second mota. Dave Shelton placed second overall, and Morgan captured third. The best racing of the day took place in the 250cc Intermediate class. Aaron Thompson won the first mota with a great gate, but he had to work hard to get by Rich Fox midway through the second moto. Thompson took first overall, with Charlie Pelton second and Fox third. Light rain fell all day, making the track quite challenging for the 80cc classes. but the racing was fast. Decker got off to a poor start at the first gate, and Joey Harris held the lead through most of the first mota until Decker got by coming off the table top. In the 80cc (7-11) class. Curtis Sweeney jumped out to an early lead in the first moto. Kevin Sellon and Larry Azevedo raced hard all the way, with Sellon placing second and Azevedo third. In the second mota.
