FEB. 19-20 Jeff Hagan battled both the weather and the competition and emerged victorious in the Toyota Gold Cup Unlimited Formula One Grand Prix during the second round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club action at Willow Springs International Raceway. On his Champion Auto Rentals~sponsored Yamaha Rl, Hagan was the quickest off the line in the Formula One event. Curtis Adams was second, and Bryce Gross rounded out the top three. Midway through lap three, Adams slowed suddenly in turn six but held on Lo second place. Two laps later, Gross had closed on Adams, and as the two racers came up on a lapped rider, Gross was able to maneuver past Adams into second. On lap nine of the 12-lap event, Adams closed back up on Gross_ At the same time, Hagan was slowed by some lapped traffic, and suddenly the top three were within striking distance of each other. With two laps remaining, Adams powered around the inside of Gross in turn four. Adams continued to twist the throttle in an attempt to catch Hagan. Down the back straight, Adams tried to pull around Hagan but had to back off going into tum eight. At the line, Hagan held on for the victory, with Adams finishing second and Gross taking third. Gross seemed undaunted by the wet weather when he followed up his third-place finish in Formula One with a vic;.ory in the Ontario Moto Techrream Hewitt Formula Two GP. In fact, Gross had four race victories on the day and two second-place finishes. In the Formula Two race, Gross powered into the lead off the line on his Dunlop-shod Yamaha Rl, with Sam Camibucci on his tail in second and Jeremy Toye in third. Within a few turns, Toye had been passed by Marc Palazzo. Heading down the front straight to complete the first of eight laps, Gross and Carnibucci were side by side, but Gross retained the lead on the exit of tum one. On the next lap, Palazzo crashed in turn six, moving Toye back into third. However, he was facing a strong challenge from Jason Catching. At the halfway point, both Gross and Camibucci remained locked in a tight bat- Results BfBK OPEN; 1. JlIson Birdsong (Yam); 2. MlItthew Slephens (Sol): 3. Eric HlIvins (Hen); 4. Glen Helen Raceway Park Davis Ty's one on at SRA GP By DAVE DAIN SAN BERNARDiNO, CA, JAN. 30 Ty Davis started the Southland Racing Association's 2000 racing season with a bang, as he rode to victory in the Over 30 Expert division aboard his Montclair Yamaha-backed YZ426, at Glen Helen Raceway. Jimmy Lewis led the 20-rider field into the first turn to grab the holeshot. Davis gated second, with Fred Conover, Steve Flanders and Katin Maviel rounding out the top five. Lewis maintained his lead as the field charged toward the Vintage track. Davis followed on his heels in second, with Conover trailing in third. Maviel advanced one position into fourth. A hard-charging Gordon Ward picked up several positions, moving into fifth. While the riders were out of view in the canyon, the top five positions underwent major changes before the riders re-entered the National track: Davis emerged with a 10·sec· ond lead; Ward had moved from fifth to second; Andrew Jefferson came from outside the top five to settle in third; Maviel held on to fourth; and the former leader, Lewis, had dropped to fifth. The top five remained the same for several laps, with Davis and Ward setting the pace, distancing themselves from the rest of the field by 30 seconds. Jefferson and Maviel remained locked in a battle for third. Lewis remained in fifth, but he was reeling in the riders ahead of him. Davis marched on in the lead. Ward kept Davis honest at a 10-second deficit. Lewis was not content with fifth, so he picked off both Jefferson and Maviel to secure the final spot on the podium. With the race entering the 35-minute mark, Davis maintained his 10·second margin over Ward. Then Ward high-sided in the short rhythm section that leads into the left-handed bowl turn. handing Davis a 50· second lead. Ward struggled to get his VOR thumper started, but Lewis got by for second. Ward restarted the thumper in time to hold on to third. Jefferson and Maviel continued to battle in fourth and fifth, respectively. Davis took the checkers with 50 seconds to spare. Lewis and Ward took the final spots on the podium. Maviel and Jefferson swapped positions late in the race, taking fourth and fifth, respectively. Results PfW: 1. Geraldo Mirnnd: 2. Haley Duran; 3. Jessie Ferguson: 4. Anthony Smith; 5.
