I don't know where Lowe finished, but I know he had some trouble and fell back in the pack. Today's all about the start. If you get a good green and take the first turn out front, you've got a chance. These things [races] are over quick, real qUick." Butler went on to take second in the Senior short-track class, and Lowe showed Butler a hot shoe or two in the Open Pro IT class by beating his teacher to take second place behind Team Green Kawasaki rider Jordan Moneymaker. The Ohio team came and saw, did some conquering, and cruised back north with some well-deserved respect. eN Muhlenbel1l Caunty Convention Center 6reenville, Kentucky Results: february 13, ZOOO [Round 11 Muhlenberg County Convention Center: Bobby Lewis (85) and Sam Lowe (32X) battle it out in the Open Pro IT event at the opening round of the Western Kentucky Dirt Track Championship Series in Greenville. Western Kentucky Dirt Track Championship Series Round 1: Muhlenberg County Convention Center Lewis laps 'em up By DAVID H. By the end of the day, Lewis began to tire from his numerous laps around the circuit, but he managed to find his second wind and gain his sweetest revenge of the day. Ohio's Butler, who had held off Lewis in the Open Pro short-track main, lined up again in the early evening in the Senior IT main. Beside him, chomping at the bit, was Lewis SCREWS PHOTO BY THE PICTURE MAN GREENVILLE, KY, FEB. 13 teve Nace Racing and Ezell Sports Promotions joined forces to lay the track out fast and flat under the roof of the Muhlenberg County Convention Center. Riders from the northern states, the East Coast, the South, and the Midwest made the journey to test the competition gathered at the combined short-track and IT event. The star of the event was Paducah, Kentucky's Bobby Lewis. Out of eight classes entered - four short track, four IT - Lewis had five first-place finishes, one second, and two fourths. Riding an assortment of bikes, Lewis took on the likes of Mike Butler, James Dean Faulkner, Rod Hartzel, Dene Williams and Kevin Hilbert, and made his presence known in each and every lap of each and every heat and main. In the Open Pro short-track event, Lewis dogged Butler like a cutting horse on a calf's rear. He came off the green light right behind Butler and, for the next 12 laps, he tried to intimidate and push Butler from the inside of the track and out on the cushion, but nothing worked, and Lewis - no more than half a sprocket behind Butler - had to settle for the second spot. Lewis' revenge came in the Vintage Vet and 250cc Pro classes in the short-track program and in the Vintage Vet, Senior and Sportsman 250cc classes in the IT events. During the five races, Lewis leaned in and laid the track low, grittin' and gearin' his way to the wins and some well-deserved recognition by the fans. S 38 MARCH 15, 2000' eye I on his KTM. From the get-go, Lewis and Butler were side by side. The race started off ferocious and stayed that way until the third lap, when Butler buzzed out in turn one and left the lead to Lewis, who went on to take the win and a well-earned breather now that his day of racing was over. Hands down, the class act of the day was John Skinner and his burgundy-and-silver vintage Triumph. With style and grace, and a line and rhythm to match, Skinner powered his machine to victory in both the Vintage Sportsman 600cc and 750cc classes. Butler and Sam Lowe made the trip south from the Cincinnati, Ohio. area as a team. Butler, the teacher, sponsor, mechanic and racer, brought Lowe, his pupil, to expose him to the broad base of talent at the Greenville event. After legging his Rotax machine around the indoor circuit for 12 laps in the Open Pro short-track class, Butler took the victory lap. "It's great, just great," Butler enthused. "Steve Nace has put together some of the best competition I've seen in a long time. The track is excellent. The racing is furious. The competition is stiff. And I feel good - real good - about my win. e n e vv s Virginia Horse Center. Yamaha of Kingsport's Kevin Walker took Friday's 125cc A win. In Friday's 125cc A main event, qualifier winner Daniel Tesh of Sugar Grove, North Carolina, found himself out in front, covered by Walker and Jeffrey Yentzer of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. While Tesh waltzed away aboard the AI Lane Yamaha, Yentzer pressed for the pass to gain second and got the job done at about the halfway point. However, Walker repassed him
