BY CLAY LIGHT SALEM, OR, FEB. 25·26 e final showdown of the CMCsanctioned Winter Arenacross Series featured a rare appearance by Southern Oregon's Ryan Huffman, who walked away with the] 25cc and 250cc Pro-class wins at the championship round of the series, held in the Exposition Arena at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. Huffman served notice that he's back in a big way from his injurymarred] 999 season by not only posting impressive victories in his Saturday sweep, but beating the heavy hitters who have dominated the series from the opening round, Ryan Leach and Mike Storm. Friday night's largest class was the 125cc Beginners, which was split into two divisions. Division One was a shootout between the top two in points, Ryan Brubeck and Jake Justen. The Yamaha-mounted Justen narrowly edged Brubeck at the finish for a moto-one victory, but it was Brubeck who darted out front at the start of moto two and stayed there. Justen did all he could to dump the Suzuki-mounted Brubeck back a notch, but Brubeck's nearly flawless performance earned him the win in the overall tally, ahead of Justen (] -2) and Mitchell Robbins (3-3). Newcomer Rodney Smith turned some heads with his Division Two win. Smith scooted his KTM to the front of the pack in both motos and was never seriously challenged in his] -] sweep, ahead of Honda riders Mike Maxey (22) and Bill Allen (4-3). While Leach easily notched wins in the 250cc and Up The Hill Pro classes, Honda-mounted Ryan Huege also placed himself among the elite few double class winners with his 80cc (] 4] 6) and Supermini-class victories, both of which came after runaway performances by the rider from Yamhill, Oregon. Californian Kyle Kent ran second to Huege in the early stages of the combined 80cc age-group classes, but Kent faded backward, which opened up the door for 80cc (7-] ]) winner Travis McMackin, Brock Chappelle (who won the ] 2- to ] 3-year-old class, and Ajay Olinger to slip past the Kawasakimounted Kent, who finished fifth. In what would be Storm's final ] 25cc Pro win of the season, the CR pilot went uncontested as he defeated a field of ] 25 and 250cc Junior contestants. Bryan Thibedeau controlled the tempo in the Junior portion to finish ahead of Aaron Tunnell, Austin Gettel, Tim Ricketts and Justin Jensen, who rounded out the top five. More than 300 riders were on hand for the Arenacross Championship, including the Kawasaki-mounted Huffman, who has of late returned to his form of old. Aboard the Shoei/Answer/Hillsboro Motorcycles/Washougal MX Park-backed KXs, Mike Stonn (27) and Ryan Huffman (75) battled in both 125cc Pro motos at the final rounds of the CMC-sanctioned Winter Arenacross Series in Salem, Oregon. Huffman faced some tough competition from the unbeaten Storm, and from Leach, who had only two losses. Storm nabbed the lead in the opening ] 25cc Pro-class moto, followed closely by Huffman and a field of ] 25cc Intermediate riders. Huffman quickly narrowed the gap that Storm had opened up, clinging to Storm's rear wheel by lap two. This set up one of the best battles of the season, until Huffman used an aggressive move that sent Storm sprawling to the 'ground while Huffman nabbed the lead. Huffman went on to victory, ahead of the top Intermediate rider, Will Wallace, while Storm was slow to remount and finished a distant fifth in the class. "It [the crash] happened so fast that I didn't know what happened," Storm said. "It knocked the wind out of me, and it took me a while to get going again." Both riders, though, agreed that the mishap was "just a part of racing," although Storm's leg was badly bruised and his radiator damaged in the altercation. Storm came back with a vengeance in moto two, putting huge ground on Huffman with a monster holeshot, only to have Huffman make up an incredible amount of time in the whoop section, which he navigated flawlessly. Two laps later, Huffman held the lead, albeit a minuscule one, as Storm rode in his shadow. Then Storm lost his front end and, though he remounted quickly, his season-long domination had come to an end. Huffman carded a sweep of the ] 25cc action. Wallace again topped the Intermediate class, trailed by Albert Odden and Tyler Meyer. Huffman's 250cc Pro win was also hard-earned, as Leach, who was riding a brand-new Yamaha YZ426F, dodged Huffman's roost throughout the first moto, which concluded in a close finish when lapped riders allowed Leach to close the gap on Huffman. However, Leach lost out by less than a wheel to Huffman at the finish. Huffman and Leach traded the lead several times during the second moto, but this time lapped riders worked in Huffman's favor, as he would put two bike lengths on Leach at the finish to seal his stellar evening, denying Leach a win - his third loss of the season. Suzuki-mounted Tye Crandall, the lone Intermediate, trailed the Pro duo to the finish in both motos, ahead of top Junior Aaron Tunnell, who won both Junior contests, followed by Steve Miller and Brody Baxter. eN Exposition Arena Salem, Oregon Results; Febl1lary 25-26, 2000 Frktay P/W (7-8): 1.
