Mixed with low-lying and darker clouds. the heavy snowfall made visibility near zero. The Salinas Ramblers did an excellent job of locating several riders who were stranded on the course after dark. However. A 250cc rider Greg Ruffani. who took a wrong turn and was off course a few hundred yards after the 14th check. decided to stay put instead of taking the chance on riding even farther off course and gelling lost for good. The howling winds prevented him from hearing the noise of the engines. horns and sounds made by the search crews looking for him. Ruffoni, who is a Forestry major in college and works parttime as a ranger at the Stonyford OHVRA. relied on his common sense and outdoor knowledge to endure the night in the cold. wet snow near Santa Rita Peak. The next morning his bike wouldn't start. so he walked until he found the course markings and soon afterwards came across the search crew.
