Coalinga. CA . February 20.2000 AMA,lFMF National Championship Enduro Series Round 1 : Clear Creek riding on reserve. Some followed the trails back to camp at a cautious pace, also because of the weather. "I was able to borrow some gas after the check," Davis said, "so I just putted on in (to gas). It looked like a lot of guys were doing the same." At the gas stop, scores showed Hawkins ahead of Davis and Lafferty by two points and Lykke and Pearson by three. Matt Stavish was five points back from Hawkins and the other top riders were down by more. Again, dry clothes and gloves were put on (by those who had any left). and the AAs, and A- and B-c1ass Sportsmen set out to begin the third loop. Five more checks, 38 mHes of rapidly deteriorating terrain, and some of the tightest and rockiest trails were next. The same steep, rocky hill after gas with slick mud and slimy rocks proved to be too much for several riders to conquer a second time, so many of them returned to camp and called it a day. "The third loop was so tight, it was mostly all first- and second-gear stuff," Moose/D.1. D/Spectro/Race Tech-sponsored Davis said. "It wasn't possible to keep the speed averages, especially in this weather. Some places were like trials sections." "The last section was really gnarly, (Above) Heather Wilson crests the top of a steep climb early in the second loop. She went on to win the Women's A class. He topped the Open A class in sixth overall. 16 MARCH 8, 2000· cue • e nevys I didn't see a lot of riders out there," KTM's Lafferty said. "The hills were tough, but there weren't any bottlenecks. The club did a good job with the loop and the course." At check 11, A 250cc rider Tim J. Stowe smoked, and his score of two was the best one recorded. Hawkins and Davis each dropped three, while the others all added four or more points to their scores. Checks 12 and 13 each claimed double-digit points from all of the riders 'and was where many riders houred out, ending their ride. Check 14 was placed to keep racers honest, and Hawkins, Davis, Lafferty, Lykke and Garrahan were the only ones to zero it. Everyone was glad to see the finish at check 15. "I was kind of bummed 'cause I fell over about 20 seconds from the finish," Lykke said. "I've never seen weather like this here before. I was relieved it was the end, 'cause I was so tired." Davis' and Garrahan's scores of seven were the lowest at the last check. "I was going for five in a row (Quicksilver victories), since I won the last four," Davis said. "But it looks like Randy stopped me." While scores were being turned in and calculated, Hawkins wondered how he and his four-stroke did. "I'm interested in seeing how I'm stacking up against the two-strokes," Hawkins said. When the results were calculated, Hawkins' final score of 44 gave him the one-point victory over Davis' 45. Lafferty finished close in third with 47 and Lykke's 55 gave him fourth over Garrahan's 62. Pearson was next with 65 and rounding out the top 10 were Stavish, Craig Wesner, Craig Holasek and Stowe. "I was surprised we went out for the third loop, it was cold and nasty out there," Hawkins said. "This was a tough enduro, the Ramblers did a great job. This is what National Enduros are supposed to be like." eN Quicllsilver National Enduro Coalinga, Califami. Unaffici.1 Results: Feb. 20. 2000 [Round 1 of 91 O/A: 1. Randy Hawkins (Yam): 2.
