MARCH 8, 2000' II: U II: • e n fJlllBJIJ !i7--IO£Y, Inc. P.O. 80x 5084. Costa Mesa. CA 92628-5084 e _ s CAvAKIs ELKO, NV, JAN. 14-15 The northern Nevada racing season opened at the Spring Creek Moto Palace (a.k.a. the Horse Palace the rest of the year) in Elko. Hundreds of spectators enjoyed two nights of arenacross-style racing, complete with an over/under jump, indoors and under the lights, protected from the storm raging outside. The battle between KTM pilot Ty Carson and Justin Mastalka in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes kept the crowd fired up, while gyear-old Ryan Toomey, competing in the 65cc and eocc classes, was the big winner on the weekend. Carson, riding his Jeff's Cycle Shack/Western Power Sports/O'Neal-sponsored KTM 125 and 250. won three of four Pro classes. Mastalka, riding his Fallon Jackpot/Action Cycle-sponsored RM125. won the J 25cc Pro class on Saturday night. Brothers Jesse and Richard Duncan added to the excitement, along with John Levie in the 125cc Pro class, and Errol Keller took third both nights in the 250cc Pros. Riding for Smith, FMF, RMS, O'Neal, Sprocket Specialists, Factory Effex, Excel Rims, RK Racing Chain, Works Connection and Moto Mouth Support Team, Toomey took seven mota wins on the weekend. A broken fuel petcock kept Toomey out of the first 65cc moto on Saturday, but he was still able to push his KTM to a Friday night first and a third on Saturday in the 65cc Expert class. Riding his KX80, he was the victor on both Friday and Saturday. Idaho rider Cody Conner, with a first and a second, grabbed the 65cc win on Saturday, while Elko rider Matt Memeo finished second on both nights. The race between Cobra rider John Herzog and KTM jockey Jake Maga in the 50cc Advanced class had the crowd on its feet. Maga was able to take the second-moto win for the overall on Saturday night. The crowd got a real treat on Saturday night with the Big Man/Little Man race. in which five of the Pros teamed with five Mini riders, with everyone riding 85cc machines and changing riders every two laps. The winners were Carson and Matt Cox, aboard Cox's YZ80, with Dan Richardson and John Belcher on Belcher's YZ80 in second and Mastalka and Toomey on the KX80 in third. : 1 1 1 1 ~ Keller (Hon). 30+ VET NOV: I.
