Tulsa Expo Metcalf sweeps AMA Pro-Am Arenacross TULSA, OK, FEB. 11-13 The 36th annual PPG Darryl Starbird Rod £, Custom Show presented the inaugural threeday AMA-sanctioned Pro-Am Arenacross, sponsored by Green Country Suzuki, and more than 100 riders from six states - and some 39,000 fans - converged on the 10-acre Expo building in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On Saturday, the heat races were run in the afternoon, and precisely at 7 p.m. the real racing began with the last-chance qualifiers. Four riders from each heat race had transferred to the night's main event, leaving two riders to transfer from the LCQ. Nick Metcalf, riding Suzuki-powered machines sponsored by St. Louis Power Sports. completed a sweep by winning his heat races and main events in both the 125cc and 250cc classes. Taking second place in the 125cc class was superfast Johnny Marley on his modified Yamaha. One of the youngest Pros, Marley. 17. hails from Moore, Oklahoma. Kawasaki jockey Dennis Owens took third, ahead of seven other riders in the 10lap. 10-bike main event. Metcalf took them to school again in the 250cc class by leading from the green to the checkers. The top three were a mirror image of the 125 class, with Bryan Emig (riding with a broken but healing left collarbone) taking sixth. Immediately following the AMA-sanctioned portion of the show, an additional non-AMAsanctioned show provided the fans with Extreme Thrills in the Freestyle Jump-Off Contest. Casey Bolton, Adam Carroll, Earl Kephart and Cory Green put on an outstanding display of control and freestyle excitement. Bolton and Carroll performed perfectly choreographed dual jumps over the double jumps. Kephart won the contest on Saturday night and actually jumped over the cars crushed by the Monster Trucks! At 10, the Phillips 66 Racing Fuels/Shep's Yamahabacked Green, from Bartlesville, Oklahoma, is one of the youngest riders we have seen perform freestyle, and he amazed the crowd by performing a nac-nac and a no-hander over the big double. receiving standing ovations from his fans, who clamored for his autograph for more than an hour following the event. Joiner roosted him and went on to win. Results Friday 50 AM. MOD OPEN PfWf£..: I. Gl!Offrey Wookiridge (Cob): 2. Rhett Cagle (HM); J. Ryan Doner (KTM); 4. Ryan Rector (KTM); 5.
