whoops, Brandon got loose and almost slipped off the track, and Uttle was right there to put the moves on him, making a pass before the uphill double and taking over second, leaving Brandon in third. UttJe now set his sights on Jones, turning it on and trying to make his way to the front. Everyone seemed to be having trouble getting traction, but that didn't stop Little, who stayed on the gas as much as possible, closing the gap to Jones. As the others fell back, Jones and Uttle battled for the lead. Jones finally got out of control in the back stretch, and Uttle just blew right by. Jones continued to fall back through the pack, while Uttle pulled away, giving no one a chance to get close to him. He rode comfort· ably out front and took the checkered flag for first. Brandon took second, and P.J. Rathbone moved his way into third. Chad Minter won the opening moto but had to settle for fourth overall with a 1-6 tally. In the hard-fought Pre-Teen (7-11) class, Justin Ashburn won the opening moto after swapping the lead back and forth with Christian Gibney. Ashburn was sidelined in the second moto with an injured ankle, while Gibney and Jonathan Dove fought for the moto win in a winner-take-all debate. Gibney held on for the win and the overall ahead of Dove. Cole Boutwell came from far back in the pack to win the opening 60cc moto, and then he absconded with the holeshot in moto two and never looked back en route to a perfect score. Boutwell wowed the crowd on every lap as he put an amazing amount of air beneath his little 60cc Kawasaki at the main jump. There was plenty of close racing in the 250cc C division, and there were numerous lead changes throughout the day. The end result was a three·way points tie, with Christo· pher May's 3-2 score on top. Jeremy Oxford took the silver, as his 2-3 finishes edged Brian Williams' 1-4 tally. Florida's Brian Young squared off with Josh Whitmire of Georgia in both the 125 and 250cc A divisions. Young had the edge in 125cc action and won both motos over Whit· mire. Then Whitmire turned the tables in the 250cc contest, in which he won both motos ahead of Young. Results 50 SHAfT. I. Cody Gragg (Yam); 2. Cody Logan (Vam). 50 (4.6): I. Mack Dickson (Cob); 2. Las Vegas Motor Speedway Harris harpoons Las Vegas By DICK GOODWIN LAS VEGAS, NV, FEB. 13 Racing motorcycles in the middle of the desert, Wesley Harris nevertheless managed to land a big one, as he cleaned and fried his competition while hooking the 80cc (7-11) trophy. Harris jumped into the lead to start race one, only to have Kingman, Arizona's Kirk Payne whistle past in the canyon turns. Harris wasn't having any of that, and he shol back into the lead at the step-up. Mark Samuels, Curtis Hannig and Jaegher laFountaine were involved in a tight scrap for third, just behind the lead duo. Meanwhile, out in front. Harris found that extra gear, and he cruised off to win number one. Payne kept a steady course. saB· ing across in second, ahead of Samuels. Tony Caputo came from the depths, angling a lastlap pass to net fourth. The second mota started with a feeding frenzy. Harris was in the lead, but then he was passed by both Payne and Samuels, then he repassed them both - all before the first lap was half over. Once in clear water, Harris jetted off to win number two - and the overall 80cc (7-11) tr.6>phy. Payne used his two seconds to hook the runner-up spot, ahead of Mark Samuels and Tony Capulo. Honda Red was the color of the day in the combined 250cc classes. as the big red machines filled the podium slots in the Intermediate division, and for the overall as well. The day started out awash in blue, however, as Novice Lanie Giordano led Intermediates Todd Kutcher and Troy Fitch, all Yamahamounted, down the chute to get the action under way. Honda's Mark Hermann, putting in his usual stellar effort, was carving his way toward the front. Hermann grabbed the lead before lap one was history, then blasted off to a convincing moto·one victory. Paul Hemsley was on the move, battling his way into third, and dragging Glenn Weidman with him. Hemsley couldn't find a way past Fitch and had to settle for a close third as the first half wound down. Weidman and Jeremy Dula finished in close forma· lion, just behind Hemsley. Kutcher led Aaron Byrd and Mark Hermann out onto the course to start the second moto. As the usual first-lap dogfight got under way, Hermann pushed into the lead. Dula and Hemsley emerged from the dust to take over second and third. Hermann kept the hammer down to claim his second straight win and the overall 250cc Intermediate crown. Hemsley closely followed Dula across the line, but he edged him for second overall, as Dula made sure the podium steps were filled with Hondas. By GARY CRIDER BOAl, AL, FEB. 6 Drew Askew scored a runaway win in the BOcc (12-15) division and then retumed to score an upset victory in 125cc Youth action at the sec· ond round of the second annual Southern Winter Challenge MX Series, held at Kilpatrick MX. Darrell Sims was the only other rider to eam two class wins, topping the Over 35 and Over 40 contests. More than 250 entrants from six states were on hand at the event. Askew easily won the first 80cc (12-15) moto, zmd he later overcame a second·moto spill to win the class with a perfect score. Brett Lee came from far behind in moto one to finish with a 2·2 score, over Michael Graham. Askew's second event was the 125cc Youth contest, in which he again rode his Cycle World of Gadsden-backed 80cc Yamaha. Askew apparently was not intimidated by all the full-sized machinery, and he took the gold via 2·1 finishes over Michael Shuler. 34 MARCH 8. 2000' cue • e n e VV s P/W ST1\ (4·6), I. ....... a_(Cobl, 2.lM"", (Cob), 3.
