Barona Speedway Holt hot at Barona By FRED Perris Raceway: Eric Gunther (209) and Bonnie Warch (329) battle for the Novice B holeshot in Perris, California. Warch took the win in both motos for the overall victory, and Gunther came in second overall. Ottinger tried an outside pass on Donner but WINDOM RAMONA, CA, FEB. 6 At round two of the Outlaw Dirt Trackers Winter Millennium Series at the reconfigured Barona Speedway quarter-mile oval, AHRMA regular Brad Holt blew the cobwebs off his Bultacos and easily took the win in the 250cc/pit-bike TT race, followed by Gabe Slatton and Wendell Clark. Bob Cobb and Elliott Iverson diced for the top spot in the pit-bike class, swapping the lead several times before Cobb low·sided exit- ing the infield. Holt took an easy win, with Slatton and Clark second and third. Iverson rolled in fourth, with Cobb fifth. John Garcia led race two on a TT500 from the '70s, in the combined Open Expert, Bomber and 750cc Vintage contest. Richard Pollock and Pat Dwyer quickly fell in behind him, tangling bars entering the infield righthander, with Dwyer coming out on top on his CR500 Honda. Pollock soon had his YZ400 back up and nipping at Dwyer's rear fender, barely avoided a high-side on the back straight. Lynas locked the rear wheelan the back straight and stalled his Ossa, while Ottinger stalled at the entrance to the infield, giving the lead to Donner, who was followed closely by Apple on his vintage Bultaco. Ottinger regained third, while Nick Peluso grabbed fourth in his first race. Brad Holt's second win of the day came in the 250cc Expert class. Holt took the lead, with Gabe Slatton, Frank Aragaki, Wendell Clark and Steve Ferguson in tow. Aragaki ran in hard in tum one, running around the outside of both Slatton and Holt to briefly take the lead. Coming off of turn t~o, Aragaki held a high line and got into the marbles, losing his drive and handing the lead back to Holt - a scenario that was repeated lap after lap. Holt had the speed in three and four, but Aragaki would run into tum one and make up five bike lengths to pull back around Holt. However, Holt held the lead at the finish for the win. Slatton took third - and top Novice, ahead of Ferguson and Clark. and both began to gain on Garcia. Dwyer Results squared off the hairpin leading to the oval and drove up the inside of Garcia to take the lead, with Pollock pressing to drop him back one more spot. In the infield right-hander, Garcia slipped up and gave up the second spot to Pollock, who now set his sights on Dwyer. The Honda rider had the advantage through the infield and turns three and four, but Pollock ran into tum one hard, taking the lead with an outside pass. Pollock set the pace for the remainder of the race, with Dwyer and Garcia second and third. Wayne Warrington put his XR500 in fourth after passing Rick Anders and Triumph 750 rider Sal Peluso. Perris Raceway Warch wins the war at OTHG Motocross BY CHRIS SANCHIRICO PERRIS, CA, FEB. 6 The FMF/No Fear/VP Fuel/Scott-backed Bonnie Warch topped 19 Vet Novice racers en route to a flawless )·1 win and the overall Novice B-class honors at Perris Raceway. Some' 256 Vet racers gathered at one of Southern California's most popular tracks, which is run by two of the nicest promoters in the sport, Fred and Donna Gould. While the East Coast was a deep freeze, SoCal was a balmy 85 degrees in early February. Warch is one of America's premier female racers. She finished 11th overall in the Women's National Series in ]999, in spite of the fact that she only attended three of the five rounds. On this day, Warch showed the men the fast way around Perris Raceway. "This is one of my favorite tracks," Warch commented. "It's a lot of fun, and they do a great job of design and prep." In the first mota, Warch left the pack in the dust en route to a tremendous holeshot. Chasing Warch were Eric Gunther, Brian Etter and Eric Nagoo. Jack Tanner stalled his four-stroke at the drop of the gate and had to work his way up from dead last. Tanner mounted a respectable charge and managed a fifth-place finish at the checkers. Meanwhile. up front, Gunther seized the lead from Warch and began to put some dis· tance between them. As the laps wound down, Warch began to chip away at Gunther's lead, airing her YZ out over the monstrous VP Leap and hoiding the throttle open through the turns. Warch put her machine on the rear wheel of the Leary Dirt Works-backed YZ of Gunther. Gunther couldn't match Warch's corner speed, and she made the pass to take the lead. At the checkers, Warch had some breathing room over Gunther, with Nagoo taking third. In moto two, Warch got a great jump out of the gate but was pushed wide, falling back to fourth. Gunther grabbed the holeshot, with Clint Miller and Nagao giving chase. Warch was on the charge again and in the attack position, with by far the best riding style on the track. Gunther could hear Warch coming; she rides her 250 much like a 125, revving it hard. Behind Warch, a battle for third was brewing, as Miller was being pursued by KX pilot Robert McDaniel, who made a beautiful pass on the last lap, leaping past Miller on the step-up triple to secure third, Up front, Warch sized up Gunther, biding her time. With the laps winding down, Warch dived underneath Gunther to take the lead. Gunther tried to retaliate, but it was to no avail, as Warch began to check out for the victory. At the checkers, Warch was the winner, followed by Gunther, who took second overall, and Nagao, taking home the bronze with a third. BEG A: I. Daniel BrMco; 2. John Hammonds: 3. Domy McVay: 4.
