MARRC is dedicated to the advancement of motorcycle roadracing. Established in 1983 as a nonprofit, all-volunteer club to provide a trained and organized safety crew at Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia, it has expanded in membership and scope. The club boasts over 500 active members that include racers, cornerworkers, and racing enthusiasts. MARRC now runs a nationally recognized safety crew, and a roadracing school accredited by CCS and WERA. The highlight of the evening was the surprise announcement that Summit Point Raceway has named the finish line in honor of longtime WERA starter AI Wilcox. This marks the first time that any part of the track has been named after a motorcycle racer. Wilcox received a standing ovation as he accepted the award from MARRC president Roger Lyle. and he was visibly moved by the award and the attention. National Endurance Champions Semoff Brothers Racing received the Endurance Team of the Year award. and team owner and crew chief, Chris Semoff, accepted the award on behalf of his team, and promised to win the Summit Point National again next year. David Rose, the current and perhaps last NASa champion, was present to receive his Middleweight Expert Rider of the Year honor. Rose holds the Summit Point Middleweight lap record. Bill Himmelsbach was awarded the Harry E. Morse Cup in recognition of his contribution to the sport and his many years of racing. The MARRC Presidents award was presented to individuals for their contributions to the club and to roadracing, which included Roadracing World editor John Ulrich and Thomas Piergallini. Lyle thanked Ulrich for his devotion to the sport and for campaigning for safety causes. PiergaJlini was recognized for his efforts and technical contributions to the MARRC Web site for the past four seasons. MARRC's highest award. the MARRC Cup, was presented to Howard Weiss, the club's treasurer and former Cornerworker of the Year. Weiss has improved the club's bookkeeping systems and has also been instrumental in furthering the cause of safety around Summit Point and other tracks on the East Coast. Comerworker of the Year honors went to Brad Haskin for his efforts on and off the track. Not only is Haskin a dedicated comerworker, he recruited many of his friends (and several brothers) to volunteer to build new braking markers for three of the high-speed sections of Summit Point to aid the riders. The most emotional moment of the evening came as Brian Clark received the Hard Luck Award. Clark was seriously injured during the start of an amateur race at Summit Point in September. He and his wife recounted their admiration of the c1ose-knjt MARRC racing family, and their appreciation of the safety crew and medical personnel that saved Clark's life.
